im placing an order from cabelas canada and need a set of binoculars. all i have ever used were cheapo crap that made it harder to see so im not sure what i need to make me happy. i would like to stay under $200, but will spend more if its really worth it. i'm happy with bushnell banner and legend scopes so im not too picky either

im looking for something compact but with decent power, nice clear image, focus is easy to adjust, black or camo doesnt matter.

now, go look in the cabelas fall 2009 catalogue and pick something for me:D

depends on what kinda area you wanna glass, and what time of day.
10 x is hard to hold steady, and not as good in low light as a 7 or 8 x , which obj dia, and eye piece dia etc all account for good viewing.
Its hard to get great glass without great cash :p;)
I do have a fine set for $250 shipped 8x42:D

Look for used brand name bino's instead of new cheap one's. You can do this by looking through the buy and sell or here. Swift 7x50 bino's used to be the bino of choice of the us border patrol. About five years ago they surplused them out. Steiners are the military choice, but not cheap. Before 9/11 and the usa blaming us for letting in bombers/pilots etc...you could buy surplus steiners from usa. Now the company can't/won't ship to canada.

at a $200.00 price point, you haven't improved too much with the piece of crap you are currently using. FS

Not necessarily. The Leupold Yosemite 6x gets really good reviews for a bino retailing in the $99USD neighborhood. Or a guy could get the Nikon Monarchs, a well regarded set, for less than $300USD. Or wait and watch for a good sale. I use a pair of Leupold Pinnacles 8x that cost $270USD and really like them.

$1500-$2000 binoculars aren't a reality for some guys....

Good Luck canadian hunter312.:)

You should take a look on EBay, I bout Nikon Monarch binoculars (new, in box) 2 years ago for something like $220 and I am very pleased with it. Glass quality is good, and I saved $150 from what I would have paid in a local store.

Vortex Diamondback's. Probably more like $250 than $200, but worth every penny by a mile!!! Nothing else in it's price category even comes close (and a whole bunch of stuff costing 2 or 3 times as much comes up a little short too), even better than the fabled Nikon Monarchs. I'm not kidding -- get the Vortex'es -- you'll be VERY glad you did.

I recomend 10x50 for most situations, or 7x50 for marine use. Bushnell binoculars are as good as any. Tasco are ok for cheap binoculars, but if you really use them a lot, try to get a good pair. My personal choice is Zeiss 10x40, but the price is very high.

The guy is looking to spend $200.00 and I don't think he wants 6 power, your suggestions seem to be much higher than he wants to spend.
$200.00 retail will not buy you much better glass than the $100.00 products.

See if you can find some Celestron Outland LX binos, this will be with in your price range, have a great warranty, and are decent for the money. FS

well...i did say id spend more if its actually worth it. i enjoy spending money a little to much and my order is already over $1k. i always buy a bunch of crap every fall just to have new things to play with. figured id add some binos to the list as theyd come in handy sometimes.

looks like my max price just went up to $300 to get something decent.:D

also, i would like something compact and see that the roof prism units are smaller than porro. but, i read on the intraweb that the porro offers better quality at a lower cost. is there really a noticeable difference?

also, what power should i be looking for?

Depends what you want to do with them... Personnally, if I'm scanning a field for any length of time 6x-8x is what I prefer. Anything over that and the field of view if greatly reduced... and higher magnification are harder to hold steady (for me at least )

Have you called Doug from Cameraland?

I was just browsing his site... and these 'demo' unit looked pretty good for $49US

The spouse is pretty happy with her Minox BL 8x32 BR... The twist eye cup are nice if you have to wear glasses.

Ok, I am going to re-iterate my recommendation of the Nikon Action Extreme 8x40.

Because you are right hunter312, making a good porro is cheaper than making a roof-prism.

Also, the Action EX 7x50 was the best under $200 in the following shootout. The 8x40 is regarded as better, lighter and more compact.
