Puff out your chest all you like....Walk in circles all you like...

But please, again:

Please, do tell how you can mantain 100% muzzle control walking through thick brush and watch your footing so you don't slip or trip, but cannot slip your finger into the guard and simultaneously flick off a safety....

Please explain how you cannot take the time to remove a safety, but can GUARRANTEE that you will not slip or that a stick won't catch your trigger....

If I'm missing something here, please point it out.

Defend your position, that a loaded with the safety off rifle in thick brush is safe as long as your finger isn't on the trigger.....I'd like to hear it.

All I want to know is, if he's so damn quick and profficient cycling/firing a rifle, why the need for hot/safety off....?

Would not a cocked/locked rifle put him well ahead of the curve???

I don't own weapons I own firearms and use them as such.

Safe firearms handling and proficiency in the use of firearms go hand in hand well ok I'll give a little on that I have trained many police officers that were extremely safe in their handling of their handguns but couldn't hit the target proficiently if their lives depended on it.

I'm thinking this is the case here as well...

Sorry Davey I couldn't help myself I'll stop... :D

Can deer hear the chambering of a round? I am going hunting for the first time this fall, and chambering the first round is rather loud on my rifle.

Depending on the rifle, they can hear it from a considerable distance. As you can see from the tangent this thread went on for a while, how you carry your firearm can be quite controversial with many strong opinions. In the end, you have to feel that you are/can safely control your firearm in all conditions. If you are hunting with others, ask them what they are comfortable with.

I would never insist that someone carry their rifle with a round in the chamber, and if they were uncomfortable with it, I would not want them to. Also, if I was out with people who found it bad form to carry loaded, then I would either carry empty chamber, or hunt by myself.

cz858; if the sound of chambering will scare a deer, than this will, it is rather loud.

Looks like chambered with safety and muzzle control then.

I'm surprised at the number of people who don't see a problem with a chambered round, safety off. I keep a round chambered, safety on until I see my target. It never occurred to me that people would hunt in such a dangerous state, I'll be asking other hunters from now on before entering the woods. Thanks for the heads up!
I guess some people don't learn from others mistakes, I just hope I'm not around when they make it for themselves.

I too was suspicious that there were more than a couple folks that carried with a loaded chamber, cocked, no safety that's why I ran the poll.
The one guy I met in the woods with the winchester 30-30 chamber loaded, hammer cocked walkin the woods really scared me, and I made a point to ask him where he was hunting so I could stay well away.
Personally, I won't take one footstep in the bush in that condition, and won't hunt with anyone I know that does. For me, the act of releasing the safety as I take aim is ingrained, and doesn't slow down the shot what so ever, I don't have any valid reason to walk in the bush with round chambered, cocked, safety off. You may have a mastery of trigger finger control, but that doesn't eliminate the chance of branches, or other items on your person from finding they're way into the trigger guard and then you have an ND.

Well said.

I hope that someone reads this thread, and maybe thinks about their gun handling practices, and the way guys they hunt with handle guns.

I sincerely hope that no one ever has to explain to someones child, or their spouse that their loved one wouldn't be coming home ever again because you thought that you were safe.

I agree 100%, that scares the hell out of me and it has nothing to do with my proficiency with firearms. I am 50 years old and started going hunting with my dad when I was six and carrying a gun since I was fourteen.
The bickering back and forth about carry practice is pointless. There are accepted safety rules and they are common practice for a reason, THEY WORK!!!
I am a machinist by trade and do a fair amount of work on guns as a hobby and feel I have enough knowlege on the subject of firearm safeties to know, THEY ALSO WORK!!! They are not to be relied upon solely but are one part of intelligent gun handling.
So all of you guys who have been trying to talk some sense into the "Hot Carry" crowd, I'll share one of my grandfather's expressions:
When you argue with a FOOL, all you have is two FOOLS arguing.

Anyone one running around in the woods with a saftey off is nutz.plain and simple cocked locked and safety on .is the only way to hunt.
also if you have your gun slung over your shoulder how can you be ready for that creature bursting from the under brush.might as well leave your gun in the car.
whats the point of not having a round in the chamber animals can hear your safety going off imagine what they hear if your racking your gun.
