300 WSM with the same load has more energy than 300 Win Mag

And this matters why?

I'd like to know which rifle your shooting every 300 wsm I've ever shot has had more recoil then my 300 wm or even my 300 weatherby.

Browning A-Bolt. I will admit I have only shot one 300 Win Mag and it was a M70 and it seemed to kick harder than my 300WSM. Although when reviewing published recoil tables every table I have seen has the 300WSM with less recoil than the 300 Win Mag even with a lighter rifle. Here is an example.

Cartridge (Wb@MV) Rifle Weight Recoil energy Recoil velocity
.300 WSM (180 at 2970) 8.25 23.8 13.6
.300 Win. Mag. (180 at 2960) 8.5 25.9 14.0
.300 Wby. Mag. (150 at 3400) 9.25 24.6 13.1
.300 Ultra Mag. (180 at 3230) 8.5 32.8 15.8

Short mag will have more recoil because of the design of the cartrige. You Have all the powder in a shorter caseing going through a bottle neck. Thats were the increased recoil is. Same bullet. The only advantage I see with the short mag is a shorter action. So a little less weight and faster followup. I would be more concerned of the potential short life span of the WSM calibers. They don't seam to be that popular.

Wow, some very interesting 300WSM vs 300WM facts regarding recoil, energy, performance and trajectory posted here!

Lots of ballistic knowledge here, I can tell that right away!;)

My feeling is that the 280 you seem to be sort of thinking about would balance things out really nicely between the 243 and 338 you already have.

It is my understanding that the above statement is not only incorrect, but backwards. All theory and calculations I have read, have said the exact opposite. One of the formulae below shows.

free recoil=

(weight of the bullet X muzzle velocity + 4700 X weight of powder charge)squared
_____________________________________________

64.348 X weight of gun in pounds

All other things being equal (velocity, bullet weight, and gun weight), the weight of the powder charge is the only thing that is different and the WSM will have a lighter powder charge and calculated free recoil will be lower.

I think that recoil velocity is something much more subjective that shooters perceive differently and the stock design and weight of the rifle come into play.

I bring this up only to to offset the inaccurate comments quoted previously.

In the real world, I doubt that the terminal effect of either cartridge will be much different (unless the 220 grain bullet and the case capacity come into effect).

Just get a 270 WSM and use it for everything!

PS and Edit: I do have 2, 338s and love them.....

all the mid cal will do the same thing in the real world. a 7x57 will kill as well as a 30-06 (as fas as the game is concerned) I like my 280 but both sons shot 7x57. Find a rifle u like and get it in any mid cal' & injoy. Just my .02$ AJ

You're kidding right? The .300WSM and .270WSM are chambered by almost EVERY firearms manufacturer, with the exception of Marlin and Ruger (who have their own now). They aren't going anywhere...

You will find .300wsm ammo a lot quicker than you will .280 Rem...;)

You missed the classics, the .30-30 and the .300 Savage...:D:p

I agree with the .280 or 7mm Mag, 7mm-08, 7x57, .308, .30-06 kind of thinking. Somewhere in the middle between your .243 and .338.

for conversation, i have twice witnessed 300 WSM 180 grain factory loads chronograph faster than 300 Win Mag 180 grain factory loads.

I will add this, chrony'd earlier this week, 300 WSM Federal Fusion 180gr factory ammo, 2925 fps avg for 6 shots out of a 24" barrel Rem 700 SPS stainless

Go for the .30-06. For a .28 cal I second the vote on the .280 Rem. Both of these are very versatile with handloads and will take any game that most of us plan to hunt.

Can't argue with that!

I don't own an '06, just a .280, but either would do you well. Just a lot more choice in .30-06 ammo.
