25-06 ai. 257 wby

I would have a look at some of the reloading sites. You should be able to figure out what you're looking for.

The Wby does about 150- 200 fps better than the standard .25-06 with the 120gr bullets, so I suspect the AI version will fall in between the two. My friend's .30-06 had bad throat errosion so he had the barrel set back a little and AI-ed.

On a side note I was getting ~3950fps with the old no longer available 0.257" 75 gr Barnes X. It was deadly on deer and boar. I was looking at the Barnes data for the new 80gr TTSX and in the .25-06 they are listing a max velocity of 3814 fps out of a 24" barrel. It has far superior ballistics to the old 75gr bullet - BC of .316 vs .289 - and remember that those were the days when Barnes grossly mis-stated their BCs so the actually difference is much greater (for example with the 115gr TSX they used to list .429 vs the new figure of .335).

All I can say is that the Wby was great with those little 75gr pills and I'd bet the .25-06 would be just as impressive with the new 80gr TTSX.

Published Wby ballistics tend to be a little optimistic. We have sold a lot of 25/06 AI's (26") and the actual measured ballistics are very much equal to the Wby.

What are your clients getting with the AI? I was getting 3950fps with 75gr Barnes X, just under 3600fps with 100gr Partitions and I never chronographed the 120's. All from a Stainless Synthetic Mk. V with a 26" tube.

I know one guy well and he loads his 100gr at 3550 with no pressure signs.

Of course, its not difficult to get a 25/06 to 3350 with 100gr. Add the AI and the 2" of barrel and its not really that impressive?

IMHO 3350fps with a .25-06 is really cooking. 2" in the barrel, maybe an extra30-50fps; so you are looking at another +150fps over that. I'm impressed.

Actually with a cartridge producing that kind of velocity,it is normal for 2" of barrel to make a difference of 60fps to 80fps.

I'm not one for quoting manuals but my nosler manual says a 25/06 will get to about 3350+/- a few with three different loads. I haven't chrono'ed my 25/06 loads. :(

I don't think I have ever matched a Nosler load on a chrony...

Even with such a (relatively) small charge? What would amax charge of fairly slow powder be? About 60 gr or so I'd guess.

It works out to follow the velocity range moreso than the charge weight.A 22-250 doesn't use a huge case, but it is effected by barrel length more than some lower velocity rounds using heavier charge weights.

I have played enough with the 25-06 Ackley to be able to post, without any reservation whatsoever, that it will not equal the 257 Wby.

It will however, easily get 100 gr bullets waaaaaay beyond 3500 fps with a 24" barrel and still get good case life!

Ted

I'm getting over 3600 with the 80 gr ttsx out of my cooper in 25-06 so far all i've shot is coyotes not sure if i need any more than that but an ai is pretty interesting
