Remington Vs. Colt revolvers

Lets use this scenario, your grandfather puts two guns on the table...
a colt and a remmington both from around 1860's.. Other then the name and reputation that colt has and the history behind it.. what gun is the better gun when it really comes down to it?
 
Now if were to compare the cap and balls I'll take the rem. 1858 anyday over the colt
 
Same... I don't know a heck of a lot, but as I understand it the remingtons have a longer life if treatment is equal. I know Colts are weaker on account of not having a top strap. They look better too though...
 
1851 Colt Navy any day (of course Im biased). If they were good enough for Wild Bill Hickok, John Henry "Doc" Holliday, Richard Francis Burton, Ned Kelly, and Robert E. Lee, then they are good enough for me. :D

Remington for me in percusion and in cartridge.
only cause i prefer strength in a revolver.

I like a iron thats got some heft to it :D

Come on, the '51 Colt Navy was also used by:

* Clint Eastwood in MULTIPLE ROLLS IN MULTIPLE MOVIES
* Kevin Costner as Lt. John Dunbar in Dances with Wolves
* Sam Elliott in MULTIPLE ROLLS in MULTIPLE MOVIES

You can't argue with that :D
 
just because they made it in the movies doesn't mean they're better...

not many Savage levers seen in films but they are superior to Winchesters...

I'll take a Remington by the way...same as Boss ;)

Well cause when ya shoot them all there screws dont get loose and fall out!

Colts use 3 pieces to make up there frame. held together with a bunch of screws.
Remys have a big old iorn frame and only the trigger gard is held on by one screw.
Remys use the same screw for the bolt and trigger... Colt use two screws.

Im not sure lasting longer is the issiue but if i was bounceing accross the old west in a wagon or on a horse the simple strong designe wins for me + you can cave in a skull or two in a nasty fight with a remy with that super strong grip frame.

I have two SAA Colts that are Ex guns but i prefer my 1875 Remington Army revolver set up in 45 schofield caliber.

Because no one would use them so they stay nice and new in their boxes :p

And I shall repeate; Wild Bill Hickok, John Henry "Doc" Holliday, Richard Francis Burton, Ned Kelly, and Robert E. Lee are just some of the few famous REAL people who all used '51 Colt Navy's. :D
 
I heard there were probs with stretching the arbor pin in the colts. The wedge or the pin would eventually give and need to be replaced. Not a crippling flaw, but has its disadvantages.

To elaborate, I would take a remington if I had to take the remmy if I was unsure of any future maintenance. If I thought I could have access to the occasional tool or part, Colt.
 
I would go with the remington because there is much less risk of a cap dropping down inside the frame beside the hammer, in the space where the hand fits

If were talking a battle situation I would be taking the colt open top over the remington.

The colt is a strong design,
the arbor pin has a s much steel in it as the remington frame in its whole design nearly. and the frame is also quite robust, what it lacks covering the cylinder it makes up for goin through;)

As far as whomping someone on the head with it....well Im sure the remy would do a good job of it, but the colts butt sure wouldent tickle either:D

Both are fine arms I prefer the colt.
 
Sold my Colts, but this one stays!

Not knockin' Colts, fine piece of machinery in their own right, just my personal preference.

I have to agree with 89Diesel. I have owned and fired both. I prefer the remington. No specific reason both shot well. No defects. Just like the feel of the remmy in my hands.

Hmmm. Now I'm a bit confused. Thought since the barrel relied on the arbor pin rather than a solid reciever with top strap, all the stress of recoil and pressure from firing went through the arbor pin then to the frame on a colt, rather than through the frame?

I have been wrong before:p

It was in a book called "Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861-1888".

There was a problem with the arbor pins stretching so Remington recalled the revolvers and remade them with different arbor pins (which also required changing part of the frame).

They were all killed by Remingtons :nest: :D

Frank James prefered a Remington 1875 and he died of old age :)
