I was HUNTED by a wolf tonight. Updated.

x3 woodsman,

If you want peace you must prepair for war.....

If you want animals to fear humans, you must give them a reason!

A 19-year-old woman has died after being attacked by two coyotes in Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

The RCMP confirm the woman died overnight at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.

The woman was hiking on the Skyline Trail when she was attacked Tuesday. She was taken to the hospital in Cheticamp, then airlifted to Halifax in critical condition.

Park superintendent Helene Robichaud said the victim was a tourist from outside Nova Scotia who was walking the trail alone.

She said other hikers managed to scare off the coyotes.

An RCMP officer shot one of the animals, but couldn't find the body. Park teams are expected to head into the area Wednesday to search for the coyotes.

"We're fairly confident that they will be there," Robichaud said Tuesday.

Wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft said this kind of attack is extremely rare and he's never heard of such a serious case in Nova Scotia.

He said coyotes, which are normally up to 50 pounds, are usually very shy, though they can be bold.

"In situations like a national park [where] usually there's no hunting and no trapping allowed, they can get used to a human presence and not have much fear of any retribution," Bancroft told CBC News.

It's unclear what happened in the woods on Tuesday.

Bancroft said it's possible the hiker didn't even realize what was happening.

"They may have snuck up on her and knocked her over before she even knew what happened," he said. "They may have been youngsters. They just may not have had a lot of experience or they may have just capitalized on a situation where a young person was acting vulnerable and very frightened by their presence."

He said there's a slight possibility that the animals had rabies.

Bancroft had his own run-in with a coyote several years ago when he was alone in the woods.

"A coyote came straight at me. It happened very, very quickly. It stopped and I just stood my ground, I didn't act," he said. "It actually regrouped and charged again. And I think the fact that I didn't act like a prey item convinced it to leave me alone."

Bancroft advises hikers to be alert and their leave iPods at home. He also suggests carrying a knife.

I would suggest carrying a gun!

Any predator will size you up and try to figure out if it can take you and make a snack out of you ...or if you will do the same to it. Blanket statements on coyotes, wolves, black bears, and cougars not eating humans is absurd. What makes us so special compared to any other warm blooded animal out there? Their fear of man or lack there of, is purely based on conditioning from it's own learned and/or taught experiences from it's parents. It's either figured out man is a big pussy or that man shoots/kills and must be avoided. The less we shoot them the more brazen they become.

Very well said! Agreed...
Animals are VERY unpredictable, as the above article reminds us. A most unpleasant way to go

"Bancroft advises hikers to be alert and their leave iPods at home. He also suggests carrying a knife."

Yeah shoota... I'd rather have a .45 than a knife, Its nice to know that its still considered acceptable to defend your self against an animal attack....

I have know of several guys getting surrounded or sized up by wolves while moose hunting but none of them ever thought they were in danger.

Wolves in the the Ottawa Valley?
Bear hunting 2 years back a pack of wolves went on a feeding frenzy on the bait of a fellow in our party about a Km from me. I could hear them like they were right next to me.
He was in a stand 6 foot off the ground and climbed up the tree as far as he could and waited for the ATVs. It was just after dark.
(bow hunter) The rest of us had guns.

The 4 wheelers scared them off in a hurry when they came in to pick us up.

A nice 870 with a pistol grip, short BBL, and mag full of large buckshot, tucked in pac is sure a great equalizer.
While in northern BC never left home for the bush without it never worried about anything.

Eaten, maybe. Killed? I doubt it...........
I think that most of the time wolfs are just checking us out.
Looking for a hand out......
Google "Kenton Carnegie" an eye opener to say the least. .
Kenton was pulled down at least 3 times before being killed by 4 wolves ....according to a couple of expert trackers....gruesome reading

I checked my phone, the text message I got after the wolf started growling came in at 6:14. He walked around & growled at me for more than 33 minutes, then stalked me out of the woods.

LMAO. I got so into this story, on the night before Halloween, that I misread the paragraph as that this psychotic kook of a wolf had somehow managed to leave a text( I'll have ur arse before u reach car!) & Grrrr message on your cell. Geesuz, I still be in the tree if that was the case.:D

It could have been rabid or had some other illness.
According to Kevin O'Connor...a necropsy performed on a wolf shot shortly after Kenton was killed had human-like hair in it's digestive tract and that...."one of the wolves was described as black and white, fat, well muscled and weighing 46 Kilograms. There was no rabies."
