Challenger Slugs...

I picked up 30 today. What do you guys think of them? As good as brenneke? They sure look neat...

That style of slug is Italian and known as a "Gualandi", they are available in at least a few other brands but Challenger's seem to be loaded quite a bit heavier. I like the fact that Challenger's a Canadian company and they'd probably be my slug of choice if they were easier to come by in my area.

They are a little softer than the Brennekes and don't have the same penetration in my experience. They are just as accurate as the Brennekes in my 870P and I tend to use the Challengers for practice and keep the more expensive Brennekes for use in the field.

Where did you pick them up,B? Were they in Red Deer? I would be interested in trying some out as well?

I got them at the south end CT. I bought all that was out on display. I didn't ask if there was more. $15.49/10 IIRC. They are going to be my bear load, replacing Federal 2 3/4" 1 1/4 oz slugs. They fact they are Canadian is great.

I noticed they do seem to be a bit soft, would you say they penetrate better than Foster style slugs? I'll be finding out for myself soon but I'd like to know your opinion.

The Challenges are Foster-type slugs. They work well and are accurate in my guns but I like the Brenneke's better. Why are you switching from the Federal?

Gualandi slugs are a lot closer to Brennekes than Fosters, both in design and penetration, that I've been to tell anyway.

challenger slugs

Available at cambodia tire . They work as good as any slug in a regular barrell for me, i can miss a deer with these or the expensive ones.
Sabot slugs out of a rifled gun are the real deal for the farm deer that we go after.

These look like they should do very well on deer.
Myself I am a bit like Claybuster. In that, I am a big fan of Brennekes too.

One of two Brennekes used, at eight feet from tracker's 870. This sow put her cubs up a tree, and circled the three man team. One of them got three shots off, from his semi-auto rifle. The tracker put an end to this little adventure with his shotgun.

The alloy used in the Challengers seems to be harder than the Brennekes. The Brennekes are heavier, 600 grs vs 492 grs, but the Challengers are faster, 1600 vs 1300, according to my chronograph. Wound volume and penetration should be similar, although I've heard some folks claim unhappiness with the accuracy of the Challengers, for me they fall into the acceptable range.
