Hunting on a budget

Great post!

I certainly didn't have much to start with, just some hand me downs and work gear. But it cretainly got the job done. As a university student myslef, I have more than enough gear that I have collected over the past few years. I found the best way to do it, is just like the OP said, buy after the season and save some money.

Something that works for me. If you can't afford those nice big heavy winter camo coats and overalls. Buy a 'big' long-sleeve shirt and pants a few sizes to big, and put them on overtop of your regular work or winter clothing. Works like a charm!

the only "hunting" gear I've got apart from my rifles, is a couple knives, binocs, and a pair of boots. Everything else is multipurpose. Work pants, shirts and jackets, my dirtbiking backpack...Ya don't need special gear to walk into the bush.

I've never seen the need to buy dedicated hunting clothes (camo shirts, jackets and pants, etc) I have shot a dozen plus moose and 20 or so deer wearing old jeans, a t shirt, sweater and fleece jacket with an orange vest and hat. Boots I use most often are the rubber ones from Canadian Tire with the felt liner. Knife is a graduation gift.

Since I just walk across the road to hunt deer, by far the most expensive part of my deer hunt is the tag.

You lucked out there! lol

Great post Ooops. It is easy to get caught up it the "Gear Craz" I know I have a lot of hunting gear that I don't really need and had to have.

Do they make me a better hunter??????

Interesting to read all the different views about hunting equipment. I wear whatever boots are comfortable, just work boots. Over the years I have assembled a jumble of deer hunting stuff that suits me just fine. I have never carried binoculars, as the whitetail deer are easy to see and identify. I have two "hunting" knives. One my ex gave for a present probably thirty-five years ago, and the other I can't remember where it came from.

Those of us who don't carry binoculars aren't second class citizens. Nor are those of us who don't have name brand hunting clothes and boots. Layers are important when it comes to keeping warm. I live in SK where it is law to wear blaze, yellow or white for deer/rifle, so that makes it a bit different for the outside layer. I have a plastic tub full of various blaze orange stuff I've gathered over the years. There are some "name brands" - Peavey Mart hat with ear flaps, Wal-Mart toque/face mask, Belarus (Russian tractor company) jacket.......:p

The one thing I wish I would have invested even a tiny bit of cash in when I was just starting out was a camera of any sort. Just something I never thought about back when those who would take us kids out 15 years ago and are unfortunately no longer around. The memories are still vivid, but photos would be priceless. Just my opinion though. KO

Great post. I love the scope and gun thing. I picked up a Ruger m77 tang safety in .308 with a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4 last fall for $350. The metal and blueing were in tip top shape, the stock was in good shape, not perfect but acceptable. Gun shoots 1 inch groups at 100 with ammo it likes.

I have been there too. Trying to outfit my two boys who loved doing what I did and myself also. Most of the time I gave them the better stuff. Now that they are moved out . I have picked up some of the gear that I wanted.

For the money in Ontario you can put more meat in the freezer with 24 home made goose silhouettes, a reasonable call, a case of steel shot and a single shot 12 gauge than people who kill one deer a year, plus your season lasts 107 days.

You probably can, but I am pretty sure there are possession limits back east (that includes all the birds in your freezer) that only allow what, 16 geese and 16 ducks? Boned out, it is a fair amount of meat but not quite what you might get from a decent WT buck.

I like to think of birds as "supplemental supplies".

You still have a posession limit. Some places allow you to shoot 5 or more deer. Im sure thats more then the waterfowl possession limit.

I could also say "I can walk out my back door, shoot a moose with grandpas .303 enfield, with one shell, and end up with 600 pounds of meat"

I was looking for some nice cutlery this season and friend suggested he just uses a box knife and just throws out the blade after skinning a deer. I like to think of myself of being cheap but was a little skeptical until I tried it. I was pleasantly surprised to note these worked really well for the task. Blades cost 10-30 cents and are always super sharp.

What is the possession limit on Snow Geese ??

Possesion is 24 geese, once it has been converted to pepperettes or similar it no longer counts towards your possesion limit. How many people on a tight budget are going to kill 5 deer that's $200 in tags alone.
