Went to the gun club with the above weapon to see how the old girl would do with Hunting ammo. I went to Canadian Tire and picked up a box of Federal Powershok, 150 gr. This is likely the bullet size I will use when I go hunting in Alberta for mule deer, with a buddy out there in a couple of years. I haven't decided yet to take this rifle or a Longbranch No.4, MKI that I have that has been scoped, sporterized and shortened(bubba'd).

The circled grouping in the photo is the grouping with the Federal ammo. The hits at the top and bottom of target was 1943 DIZ military ball ammo. Not sure if they were so off target because I was warming up or if it was the ammo. The old military stuff usually shoots good out of my Longbranch. Oh well. The powershock grouped well. Wish I hit the bulls eye though. These were standing shots out to 100 metres. I guess it would have been good enough to bring home the venison if the deer is going to be roughly that distance away. I do need more practice.

This is my Fazakerley below.

Here are my range results today. (below)

A 4" circle at your furthest comfortable shooting distance. That is all you need to put a second round into the vital organs of a deer.

That's a pretty good grouping for factory hunting ammo, and your POI is pretty good if your POA is right in the grey. I wouldn't change a thing on your sights.... assuming you were using the long-range peep and it was set at 200. Was it?

That group would shrink considerably with hand-loaded ammo. Federal 150's shoot the worst in all of my Enfields. I like the Sierra Pro Hunter 180's or the Hornady 150's, backed up with the right amount of H4895 for each loading.

No, I didn't flip up the long range peep sight. Only used the fixed peep sight. I think there good to 100? I tried to get it lower into the bull. I guess my eyes wouldn't let me or maybe I should have flipped up the long range peep sights. I'll have to remember to try that next time.

Cool! I thought so, but wasn't sure. I'll have to try out further next time. 200 to 300 metres. Without a scope I think 200 will be a big enough challenge for me with the enfield. My buddy says hunting mule deer in Alberta, south of Edmonton you will have some long shots as it is flat open country. But that is likely a discussion for the hunting forum. Next time out I plan on using my Sporterized 43 Longbranch No.4, MkI with the Federal powershock, 150 gr. and see how it fairs in that rifle.
More practise, that's ok.

Definately have to learn how to reload again. I have the dies for 303 brit. It has been years since I used my reloading stuff. Have forgot a lot. I used to reload for Precision target rifle in .308. But I only started that the year before I stopped shooting in that discipline. I hope to get back into reloading again soon.

Nice rifle and nice shooting. For Ammo I like the Winchester 180g Super X. With my scoped Longbranch, I get 1-1.5" groups at 100 yards. Its also a little cheaper then the federal stuff, and the brass is better IMO.

The battle sight is set for 300yds, more or less. So you should be a few inches above your point of aim on paper at 100yds.

I always use the long range peep sight, it's smaller and allows for better groups.

I have to agree on using the flip up portion of the sight for range work, the large aperture is a "battle sight" designed to get the rounds on a man sized target quickly from 0- whatever. If you were brush hunting, in close, it would be the way to go. It appears, however, that you have a terrific shooting rifle, and one that you shoot well - so why not bring home the meat "old school". Besides, nothing beats being out in the woods with a military rifle.

Thanks. Next time I'm going to get a box of winchester 150 and 180g and try them both. See which ones work better. So far I have only seen boxes of 180g Super x locally. All in all, I am impressed at how well my Fazakerly Enfields shoots and how well I do with it.

So far, this looks like the one I will take west when I go. Too early for a definate decision yet.

My scoped and Bubba'd Longbranch has had the barrel shortened, so I'm not sure about how well it will do out to 300. So far with 150g prvi partizan and old mitlitary ball ammo it has worked well at 100m. I plan to see how well both do, and myself, out to 200 and 300 over the coarse of the winter. I will also try different brands of ammo. Which won't be much as there is a short list of factory ammo that can be found locally.

This is why you must reload! Once you do, you will never go back to factory ammo again. I shudder at ever buying factory .303 again.

Yes, I should pull my reloading equip out of the box and re-learn it. I have a couple of years before I go west hunting, so that should be more than enough time to develop a load for either of my No.4's
Thanks for the reminder!
