They're a small company but from their website it looks like they're ramping up production.

# We are expecting to break ground in early Q3 on our new facility. This new building will mainly be used to store excess materials and make room for new CNC machines. It will also house our new R&D lab.
# Three more Mazak Horizontal Machining Centers are slated to arrive early next quarter to be used mainly for the milling of RFB parts.
# We are also attempting to expand our in-house barrel production due to the unpredictable nature of outside suppliers. This new expansion is expected to increase rifle production significantly.
# RFB production is still in its early stages: rifles are being shipped every week but not in full production batch numbers as of yet.

Or maybe they didn't get it completely right. Perhaps we're lucky they're not in full swing yet as they work out some minor bugs.

Last night I read some postings at the KelTec Users Group website regarding one fellow who had some welds break on his RFB after > 1,000 rounds of use. Pictures were included.

Am I allowed to post links to 3rd party gun website forums?

I will wait until they make another 1000 before buying one.

That's the image I saw last night and it cast a shadow over my wanting to be an "early adopter".

But, the way things are going, I'm betting that they will probably be at least a couple thousand units into their current model production run before we start getting non-restricted units sent up over the border.

I'm sure that guy will get his fixed for free. Kel-Tec is pretty cool about that.

I've been doing more reading on the subject, and the fellows on the KelTec users group website all seem to agree that KelTec stands firmly by their products with great support.

There was a recent report of a fellow with a bent or damaged ejector tube, and KelTec replaced it with a stronger stainless steel one. Perhaps that issue was related to the earlier reports of heat treating problems with the ejector chutes?

Despite the teething issues, I'm still a supporter of the rfb. Not many private company guns without gov support hit the market completely perfect. Heck, look at the M16, it had years of teething issues, and that was with gov support.

If they can get production of a gun with no issues up to speed, I think this could put kel tec up there as a major and ground breaking player.

Ya but this isn't the 60s. Companies have access to state of the art equipment now and there should be no reason for a rifle to leave the factory flawed. It all comes down to a sound design and a solid amount of T&E.

I'm pretty sure that Skeetgunner was joking (as indicated by his "fire in the hole" tags along with the smiley face that he added to the end of that sentence.)

To the best of my knowledge bullpups are NOT illegal.

I ordered the Norinco Type 97 from Canada Ammo; it is a bullpup.

You can also buy the Travor from this same site, also a bullpup.

Both are non-restricted.

I get the feeling that it is going to be, leterally, FOREVER, before Canada gets a shipment of 18.5" and longer barrelled, non-restricted RFB's...:(

Which makes me wonder why so many rifles have a standard 18" barrell... why is that? Why not make it 18.5" or 19"? When our government created the rules regarding barrel length did they have this standard in mind so we would have a harder time (kind of like handgun barrell lengths as well)?

I would SPECULATE..... that keeping the Mini-14 or RANCH rifle Non-Restricted was part of the decision regarding barrel length.....

just a hunch....

I think that the law was made because so many "nasty" rifles seem to have an 18" and under barrel. Same as the pistols with the 4.25" (or whatever the exact # is) limit. It was written to prohibit and restict as many firearms as possible in one fell swoop. And not upset the hunters, since who needs a short barrelled anything for "sporting" purposes?

This one hideous gun. It'd certainly catch your eye at the range or out hunting.

Out of curiosity, I called up Kel-Tec and got through to a sales agent. She said the new CNC machinery is on schedule to be fired up in January. But, no promises as to when the numbers of RFB's leaving the factory will actually increase. Also, on the topic of 18.5" barrels, she said they have no immediate plans to do anything other than their current 18" offering. She wisely avoided commenting on their longer term plans for other barrel length offerings. At that point in the conversation, I started to feel guilty for keeping her from her regular work as the gradual change in her tone of voice got me thinking that I had worn out my welcome. So, I wrapped up the call by thanking her for the info and went back to sitting at my desk feeling like Ralphie obsessed with wanting a Red Ryder bb gun :)

So it may be NEVER by the time they fill the orders for the 18" version and get to the longer versions that they indicated on their website... and wwe can forget an 18.5 inch version. If and when we get a long barrel version, i guess we can always have it cut back etc...

Nope.

It was just as the Mini-14 was being introduced.
The rule was actually written to restrict M1 Carbines. I remember seeing news reports about it. As I recall it was primarily in Montreal.

That would be another we should request changed that any rifle with a barrel longer than 14 inch should be non res.;)

The rules and regs in place (barrel lengths/action/capacities) assumes that any law abbiding citizen that buys one of the "restricted" or "prohib" firearms will suddenly go criminal... what difference does any of it make when we licence and register the owner and thier firearm anyway?
