Savage 1899 Lever?

Wil get a pic up Fri when I have some time. it is a 20" barrel , has a nice drop, narrow (guess you could call it ) pistol grip , and raised cheek piece
looks like it says - CA 3 HM under the 30/30 my eyes arn't great. so pretty dam good sleuthing on the -H - you guys. as normal i'm sure a pic is worth a 1000 words, will get one up fri, many thx for the help so far.

Raised cheek piece and a pistol grip?

I'll wait for the pic but I'm 99% sure it ain't factory wood.

Take your buttplate off and forearm and see if the butt and the forearm are stamped with your recievers serial number.

Can't really guess as to what model it is. Could be a $100,000 Monarch grade or a $1000 custom job or anything. 1904 means that Enoch Tue would have probably done the engraving on it. Would have loved to seen a pic of that gun.

Blairs gonna cream his pants when he reads this cause he's been on the hunt for one forever and now he knows theres one in Canada.

I will try for more information. I know the dealer quite well and I will see what I can do, and hope, hope, I can get a picture.
 
The 99 Savage was quite a gun. Designed in the 1800's and capable of digesting the modern rounds like .308, .243, .358 etc. Old Arthur Savage beat out everyone else on that score.

i hunt with a 99c in 308, great gun and shoots better than any other i have tried.
mine has the tang saftey and detachable mag,
only downside i find to it is the lever is loud when racking but very smooth.
I have tried cleaining and oiling but doesnt make much difference.
 
I'm a long time, die hard Winchester man, but I do own two M99's. Both are the early ones with the brass rotary mag follower and the safety by the lever. One is a 99F in 308 and the other is a standard 99 in 300 Savage. I do like them rifles. . :)

I do a lot of driving around looking for game as I have very bad knees (had surgery on both) and can't walk like I used to. When I see something I step out of the truck, slip the mag in and slowly rack a round. If you work the lever slowly, you can control how loud it is. I've got it down to a science and can get a round into the chamber quiet enough that a nice whitetail buck 70 yards away doesn't hear it. (Oh, and then I shut the truck door too firmly (oops!) and watched his flag disappear in the distance.......roflmoa.......that was the last day of season last year *sigh*)

If I have some time, or am going to take a walk, I slip open the action while I'm still in the vehicle and then slip a single round into the chamber after I exit the vehicle and quietly shut the door. Then I slowly close the action and flick the safety on and then slip the magazine in.

One thing to note, if you're playing around with the bushing that holds the lever to the frame (cleaning/oiling it) in an attempt to quiet your action down, you don't want to overtighten it. If you do, you make the action very stiff.
 
99trix: Gorgeous rifle. You owe me a keyboard, as drool is tough to clean!:p

I have a 1913 1899 in .303 Savage. Nice old rifle. I have plans to use it for whitetail next year. I got lucky and found a bag of new brass at a gun show!

I was at a gun shop a couple of weeks ago and noticed they had a 99( or 1899) in 30-30. They were willing to let it go for only $795.00. Whew!:eek:
 
99trix - can you imagine how much that rifle would cost new today if they used the same quality materials and workmanship? I have to give you two thumbs up on that rifle!
 
I had one old boy tell me you could shoot a 303 savage from a 30-30. Is there any truth to that or was he pulling my leg. when he found out I had a 30-30 he gave me a bunch of factory 303 savage and said use these. I'm too scared to try. kind goes against what my old man drilled into my head when I was a kid.

You are right - listen to what your old man said. Just sell the .303 Savage shells on EE, they are worth much more than 30-30 ammunition.
 
I have had these things in my safe for years and now can only find 10 rounds of em (303 savage) . If anyone wants em just pm me. probably find more if i go through all the junk at the back of the pile.

It is hard to believe the quality and workmanship in those days. I never knew really how nice they were until I found those two. The bluing is way nicer than even the 20's or 30's rifles as I have a few of them that are also mint.
