I never could understand how the atrocities of WWII could have happened. Especially in Germany. There's a famous experiment that attempted to look into this. It's the Milgram experiment. In today's day and age we could never conduct this experiment since it wouldn't pass the ethical standards. Because of this we don't have many experiments like it.
The bottom line, the experiment "...measured the willingness of study participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal conscience".

The scary part was how many people were willing to go through with this. keep in mind these were American University students in 1961. These experiments bring home how we're not immune to what happened before and during WWII.
I watched the actual video of this experiment while in University. Reading about it really doesn't do this justice. It's very disturbing.
