Going to Hunt with a Silent Load... :)

An arrow kills in an entirely different way than a bullet is meant to. Thats why it has a sharp point and its covered in razor blades.

A bullet is meant to damage tissue with shock trauma and break bones. Your 300fps slug is not going to do either. More likely cause bruises or only penetrate skin and a little muscle where infection will be the eventual cause of death weeks later. A good slingshot might be more deadly.

This might not be a bad idea at 900fps if you really test everything and know what the limitations of your load are but the idea as you have stated it is very suspect and I would personally say probably irresponsible.

Show me !

 300 fps...that's the speed of an arrow/ paintball. :)

I once got hit in the bum with a frozen paint ball. I don't know the diameter or the fps but it hurt like hell and I still have a scar. ( left cheek, dead center) Perhaps if you are fast enough, you can jump on the deer before it gets back up from laughing so hard. At least that is what happened in my case. I wouldn't dare print anything here without actual data to back up my opinion or at least personal experience. God forbid. Pm for pictures of scar on my butt. On a serious note, some black tail here are very big, so any restrictions on size? Got a doe tag?

The arrow wounds by cutting though and you need to put the arrow in a place where it cuts into a vital organ/large blood vessel. The force transferred will be gradual because of the cutting of the broadhead. The bullet on the other hand will transfer it's energy almost immediately, though with a load like this shot placement will still be critical.

Gee and I was wondering if those 405 grain cast boolits I loaded with Trail Boss would be enough to drop a deer. Those loads are pretty quiet too, but not like what you're describing.

Why don't you tap the bullet to fit on the end of a crossbow bolt and forget the gun altogether. The crossbow bolt will more than makeup the weight difference from the lost lead from tapping the bullet and you can save your self the casing and the powder. I think it will be reusable because I see it bouncing off instead of penetrating. LOL

Nifty! Keep us updated!

I would be skeptical, but the 2x4 result seems that this will be effective.

Not if your arrow weights 450gr.

Do these 450gr. arrows have the same "frontal" dia. as Camp Cooks 450gr. 458" bullets?.. If not I suppose that you could make a .458" blunt head eh?

I have not bow hunted since 1983.. 300fps was a pipe dream in those days..
Can you fire a 450gr arrow at 300fps these days from bows that are commonly used for hunting?

If the answer is yes then I would think a 450gr arrow with a .458" blunt larger than the shaft with a large amount of weight in the blunt for a "dart effect" just might compare to Camp Cooks bullet...
A project for the townie stick flingers eh?

If you can, try laying a fresh green deer hide in front/over your stacked wet paper medium. The elasticity in the hide may make quite a difference much like you see many bullets from full power loads under the hide on the (non)exit side of a kill. If you can still get decent penetration after this it may be doable.

Did you chronograph the slug? i shoot a lot of .45-70 so I am very interested in your experiments. i was going to try a similar experiment using Trail Boss and Unique.

Yes I chronographed all of the loads while I was developing the load.

The fastest burning powders will work the best I used Tite-Group it isn't the fastest available but it was the fastest burning powder I had.

You don't have to use styrofoam to hold the powder in place you can use other fillers like pillow stuffing for example and I'm thinking if Trail Boss is a fast burning powder it will fill the case a bit better but a 45-70 case is larger so how much will it make a differnce?

Another reason for putting the bullet in backwards and seating it until it looks like a wad cutter is that you take up space in the case with the bullet.

I used Win LR primers and a fairly light and consistant crimp.

Wish I was thinking about this this morning as I was deer hunting I found a freshly skinned deer hide about 2 days old draped over a log that I could of used.

It's over an hour drive to the spot and I will not be back there until next wekend so I'm thinking it will be gone by then or frozen solid if the temp drops.

300fps is slow. you could probably see the bullet flying thats for sure.

Ya its only 3 times faster than a major league fastball. But the ball is heavier.
Maybe we should all get together and try rocks sticks hey!! boomerangs.
Froozen paintballs would be right there energy wise too.

Nope need a flat meplat it is a proven fact that round ball just doesn't cut it... :D

I'll let you shoot me in the bum at 300 fps. Lets say 50 metres. We brought a 38 down to 300 fsp and it didn't go through a milk jug at 25. The bullet was in the water. But i have to wear some thick depends first. LOL.

Thicker than the one's you wear now?:p:evil:

You should try it before you give your 2c because they don't tumble and are more accurate than I guessed they would be.

Think I'll pop the scope back on and give them a try again they should group into clover leaf groups.

I developed these loads initially to shoot the freaking crats that s**t on my lawn but my wife made me buy a "have a heart" live trap instead...

Not as much fun but the crats aren't crapping on my lawn anymore... :D
