VZ 858 rear optic mount..

So I got to thinking today, what's to stop you from just bolting a piece of Picatinny to the rear dust cover. It seems like an ideal location for an optic.

The only problem would be wiggle from the dust cover, so you could just put a chunk of rubber between the dust cover and the picatinny rail to isolate the rail from the vibrations. Then it would be rock solid.

So I was thinking, I've spent countless hours making more mounts than I care to remember, most of which never passes the test. And I thought, is it easier making a overly complicated mounting platform to "bridge the gap", or retrofit/replace the shoddy dust cover to something you could use as a mounting platform.
It was a deceptively easy solution for someone like me that doesn't mind adding two more holes to my receiver.
I took one of my spare dust covers, welded on some 1/8" tabs, drilled/tapped the tabs & receiver and bolted it down with a couple allen head screws. I then riveted on a pic rail to the cover and voila. It's very solid and seems to have done the trick. I'll put a few hundred rounds through it and see what happens. The only downside so far is that I lost the ability to quickly remove the carrier. But I stuck a allen key in my stock for future use. It takes about 30secs to remove the cover now...
I've already worked out a version that wouldn't require drilling/tapping the receiver and after I play with this first version for a while I'll try that out.

Interesting. A while ago I was thinking about a similar solution - machining a dust cover that would bolt up to the receiver with an integrated pic rail.
But of course like most of my "solutions" it never got past the "thinking of this" stage.
The dust cover itself isn't really the problem, though. So if you've just figured out a way to lock it down effectively then that is probably sufficient.
My only real complaint with these rifles is that you can have a forward-mounted optic, but not really much else unless you are satisfied with the POSP-type side rails.
I would be really interested to see an integrated rail that goes from a locked-down dust cover to the rear sight (assuming this could be done without turning the rifle in to a stovepipe machine).
It would really be nice to get enough space to put a red dot and magnifier on. Even though the x39 is a 200m cartridge IMO, still, a 3x flip-mounted mag would be nice for the 200m shots. You MIGHT push it to 300m, I guess. Well, some people might, anyway...I am skeptical of my own ability to do it.

hey, I notice you have your safety mounted on the left side... did you modify this yourself, or was this a drop-in ambi safety you purchased somewhere?? If so, where?? I really want my safety on the left instead of the right...
Nice rail solution, btw, but if I used something like that, I'd definitely want my bolt handle on the left, as well (which, as it appears you have done, I also want to do to my rifles down the road!

Basically, yes it works but the problem is removal for cleaning/maintenance. Just like the SKS ones RTZ is a PITA. Ideally you want to be able to do all your maintenance without disturbing the optics system. Plus it does nothing to keep the ejecting cases from beating on the scope.

I've done a similar paint job on some of my stuff. After the first coat put down a laundry bag and spray the next colour.
Speaking of which, are you still working on a scope mount/deflector for the CZ?
Since I drilled/tapped the receiver as well, there are no RTZ problems. I sighted & removed and checked against my collminator and it's repeatable. Probably wouldn't be as much so if it was pressure bolted to the receiver rather than tapped right into it.
I personally wanted something not for mounting scopes on, but rather to bring a sight back, or to let me use my magnifier. That, and I was bored and had a urge before I had a use.. Not that I won't drop a scope on her to try it out once or twice.
As for the scope taking hits, that'll happen I'm sure, but I've got a real easy fix for that I'll fab up here to show you.
