VZ 858 rear optic mount..

Is my safety switch reversed or are almost every 858s pictured with the safety off?

the safety on the VZ's is absolutely useless. Try cocking your gun, put your gun on safe and tap it lightly on the floor and its going to fire. You don't even need to bump it hard.

Back on topic.

I think the cover idea is rather good. would be nice to have something that is faster to take off though. Maybe a rail that mounts on the gun and the cover attaches to that rail with a quick detach clip. Easy to take off for cleaning and returns to zero.

Could also slap on some sort of iron sight on the back so you have a longer radius btw the two instead of the typical AK'ish slider.

If your gun is that way it is unsafe and should be fixed. The VZ safety design is sound.

Wow, get that in to a gun plumber...

I could put mine on safe and butt stroke the floor and I'd bust my stock off before it fired..

The idea with this mount was to see if something could be made that was less technical that what we've tried in the past. Go for low-tech and reliable vs overly complicated. I wanted to limit the number of parts & pieces with this one. This mount start to finish was a 2-3 hours of tinkering, to make more after design with a jig in place would be minutes.

It's not a final product by any means, more a place to start other options and designs. I'm sure after it's got more use there'll be more changes, or it'll be scrapped all together.

... and get that gun into the shop.

I've got a few hundred rounds through it and it seems to do the trick. I'm going to be deer hunting the rest of the week, so I'm not going to be playing with the VZ much.

The ball is rolling to make these up. It's a matter of working a couple design changes to allow it to fit to a receiver without drilling. I may make up some that still require drilling to be done first for those with mechanical ability and then a no-drill version some time after. We'll see. It's a fairly simple design, it's just a matter of having the time to go at them.

I'd say realistically it'd be in the new year before I have any ready to go out the door.
