the official why i didnt get a deer thread

too damn warm,i hunt over as quarter section of alfalfa, and it has always been a pick and choose which one to shoot kinda deal. not this year. 3 days of muzzleloader produced nothing, only seeing one 400 yds away. rifle seaon opensstill too warm, they are staying in the bush, and feeding at night according to the trail cam. second day into a 4 day hunt i almost broke my ankle in a stupid accident and was reduced to hobbling 3 feet from my truck and stting on a stool, not that we saw anything anyways. went last wednesday and this morning to a spot i'd never hunted, lots of sign, came around a corner on a trail and that sensation of being watched. nice 4x4 20 feet off the path watching me, gone before the gun came up, and that was it. in total saw 7 deer in 2 months of hunting. worst. year. ever.

I don't buy into the too warm and windy stuff anymore . a south wind gusting to 45K per hour

You never been here before, have you? :D

45 Kph is a nice Summer breeze. This time of year the winds push 100-110 KpH. Hard to walk in, hard to breathe and almost impossible to hold a rifle steady unless your on the ground. And then the grass is 2 feet high. I know what he means. :p

I had over 40 deer in a six day period the first week of November in range, but since we were after elk, myself and my partners agreed not to shoot deer unless they were big bucks. The biggest buck that I saw in range would only score about 140 net,so he walked around in front of all three of use without a shot being fired. We saw one big buck in the 160 class, but he was across the fence in a field that we didn't have permission for.

been in lethbridge more times than i know , , and i still don't buy into the too hot too windy stuff, . Kevin 303 and other i know got nothing this year , here in MB the interlake , which is usually very good , absolutely sucked! What I do buy into though is overkill ! about 15 k from my place is a tiny town called chatfield, very hard hit area, produces trophy deer like no ones business .... till this year ..... nothing... nada.... no deer ! why ? well i'll give you a hint , We went up there 1 day ...opening day .... the cars were lined up bumper to bumper literally for 3 k , we got out of there and headed east of winnipeg , down hwy 15, to where we always go and have gone for the last 10 years . we tagged out for archery within 30 minutes of setting up , muzzleloader came up , we tagged out in 2 days , General rifle came and tagged out within 20 minutes of setting up for me and buddy tagged out the next day. got an archery buck , muzzleloader buck, and my gen rifle buck, my buddy did the same. none of our deer were "small" none were giants either , except for my buddy's 165 + 11 pointer. then again , we don't hunt for racks either, we hunt for meat , the rack is a bonus, should we get one. Now you go to other areas and they are producing nothing. some areas that are usually good are dead and vice versa . I attribute it to "pressure" if one area doesn't pan out , look around , other areas can and do quite nicely. Give an area a rest once in a while, and go elsewhere. As for lethbridge area , yeah i know about the "stiffling heat and wind " etc.... My sister lived and died close to there. And my theory may not work around there, but I don't buy into it simply because of that alone , there have to be other factors as well. I'm not the end all be all in hunting , but , my freezers are almost full , still got a moose to get , and one shotgun/muzzleloader tag to fill :) . the shotgun muzzle area hasn't been so good this year so we shall see how my theory pans out there .

Very little scrapes and rubs

We have had the same scrap line for 3 years, big bucks got shot but the scraps always came back. Until this year. no scraps in the usual spots. We did manage to get 3 deer. Another gang only got one the second week . Funny thing is the gang next to our land got 10 the second week. Seems that the deer are only in pockets not as thick and plentiful as they used to be.

Huh. Those 11 deer i saw in the first 3 days were in Narcisse. What's that, about 12kms away?

I didn't buy a tag so I have no excuse. I was talking to a guy who regularly gets 700-800 pics a week on his trail cams and he's getting about 80 pics a week this year. There must have been a nasty winter kill last year.

Caught the swine Oct30, down for 3 weeks, bad case of food poisoning Nov24. 20 lbs lighter and a month of work missed.

Don't know if I would have shot a deer if I'd been healthy as I was holding our for something big so I passed on a bunch of whitetail and mulies before I got sick.

what you were in my "hood' and didn't drop in ? bad bad bad !:p you saw deer in narcisse ? and didn't shoot any ? again ...bad bad bad ! :p
the fact that you even saw any , you should be in the book of records , :eek:seriously go to teulon and ask anyone , they get all disgusted and whiney when they tell you how crappy the season is .

:) Yes, I shot 1, see post #60 this thread. my brother filled both his tags, and saw several besides. My dad got his late last week (he's 73yo).

Perhaps I may have to travel all the way down from the NWT to show you Mb guys how to hunt.;) But I'll warn you, imported guides do not come cheap.........:p

Seriously, I saw more deer this year than I have in the last several years. I only saw the one big one out in the open, the rest were while tramping the bush. Of the 11 I saw, i think I could have bagged at least 8, maybe 9.

I'm laughing so hard right now I can hardly type.... i said the same thing , everytime i came home with a deer this year. My spot has never seen so many deer as this year , all the while where i live has never seen so few and it's only 60 k apart. This year , I have for the first time in my life actually seen bucks chasing does and being as stupid as they show on those tv shows, there were rubs and scrapes everywhere. it was unreal we had opportunity upon opportunity for big bucks, but you can only shoot what you are allowed to shoot. they were everywhere this year. then I head home , and it's like a famine has hit, and everyone is complaining about lack of deer. Oh well , winter moose is upon me , time to go get my moose ..... now where is that darn "sniperT" when you need him heheheh:p

Well Fogducker, there is still very little sign at your place, or at least as of last weekend.
Hope you guys do well on the black powder hunt.
I did find a couple of beds in the back field though, probably a doe and two fawns by the location and size.
There was also a rub in the front field, but tracks indicate it might have been made by a GMC deer.

Looks like I'll be going to my regular deer camp, if this damned cold will die off.
I am under orders to get a Christmas tree from the property, and I'd like to get some stuff finished up that we left undone, as well as tag that big MF buck I saw, but didn't get a shot at.
