Used Winchester 1894 in .32 or new Marlin 336 in .30-30?

The info I have is that the Winchester I was considering was probably built in the early 90s; reading some posts suggests that Winchester had to put back some of the goodness it took out in 1964- is that a fair statement?

That is what I understand.
Try the action on the marlin vs the win 94.
I am sure you would like better.

I have a Marlin in 25-20 made in 1905. Still works good, but I found it a little "coarser" to operate than the Winnies I have in 25-20. Could be just wear, so I cannot put either one in a lower bracket.

the 1895 45-70 Marlin Cowboy (circa 2003) I have compares closely in operation to the post 64s i have had. But personal choice is to be on the buyer.

Yeah... i just can't help thinking, "How often will I be able to buy an almost new Winchester?" I can always get a new Marlin by picking up the phone...

Yes it is a fair statement. The really bad stamped parts models started in 1964, and ended some time in 1971.
When US repeating arms took over they improved the rifle dramatically.
Still not a hand fitted pre-64, but far superior to the stamped years.
If it's an angle eject model you are looking at, a scope can be mounted just like any other rifle.

If you're talking about $400, I would find a pre-64 94 in .30/30, you should be able to pick up a real corker for 400 skins and you have a higher quality gun and better resale value.

I agree with your thoughts- I'd like something pre-64 so that it should at least retain its value.

I haven't seen much around here (Toronto area) that fits the bill, though, and even the EE's currently a little sparse. Still, not like I have to panic.

Google thegundealer, they are in McAdam, N.B. and they have a few pre-64's right now, all less than $400. They are okay to deal with, I've bought a few guns from them in the past. Their website has photos and descriptions that are accurate.
