Mini-14 for Yotes?

Sure it is. Its very reliable and easy to pack around. I bought one for that purpose but found I had little confidence in it at longer ranges due to its less than stellar accuracy, I sold it and bought a bolt action 22-250 for 'yotes. I would let your hunting area and range of the shots you'd be taking dictate if its good for you.

I got one of these instead.

Way more accurate.

I have one of the new heavier tapered barrelled mini 14's. Will easily shoot 1.5 MOA all day long. It is my coyote rifle out to as far as I car to shoot at those dogs. I use a 69 grain match bullet that I have found anchors them at just about any range. I use a straight 4x scope.

GSXRMyers thats a Remington model 7615 tactical rifle (pump action, mag fed .223Rem), its the newer model with the adjustable butt stock. Not to hijack the thread but how are .22LRs for yotes? If you were double or tripple tapping and/or going for headshots under 50 yards?

Actually not exported from Rem anymore with this stock due to the insanity south of the border. Accurate 9" twist 16.5" barrel will shoot 69gr SMK's MOA. Also there are legal 10rd mags for it (and lets not start this again:bangHead:)
I looked at the mini 14 and felt this was a better rifle for about the same $$.

I've heard of people using 22LR for yotes. It's not the ideal clean kill of a bang flop from a high energy round like a 17HMR or 223 but they do run/walk a bit and drop. If you can keep steady enough to get a head shot go for it. That would be ideal.

As long as reach-out-and-touch-something accuracy isn't necessary, then by all means, it would make a great 'yote gun. I'm currently eyeing my mini-30 and thinking the same thing. :)

I love my Mini-30 for 'yotes under 200 yards.
Fast firing, easy to handle, hits them like the proverbial tank it is.
Only problem I had was the factory scope mount screws provided by Ruger had a tendency to loosen themselves with the recoil. I lost one screw and could figure out why my 30 wouldn't even shoot minute of barn.

In short, I love my mini-30 for coyotes.

I'd buy a Stevens 200 first and pass on the machine gun. Least that way, you'd be able to hit something you actually aimed at. ;)

Yeah, you gotta be REAL careful when you're clamping the scope down that the little catch lines up straight when you torque it down. If it's not, then it comes loose. Really annoying design, actually (but really a "no big deal" kind of thing, once properly clamped down).

Yeah, I think i'll just avoid the problem completely and buy a rail that sits across the mounts.

I wish I had that 7615 however, and with the recent jump in prices of mini-14's and the difficulty to get mags, they look better and better every day.

Handle a mini-14 at the local gun store, try it next to a 7615, you may hate one, love the other.

As far as semi-auto, non-restricted .223 firearms go, I think the mini is a solid choice for 'yote hunting.

The question was would a Mini-14 be suitable for yotes. A 223/5.56 round is used for killing humans up to 600+ yards, it would defnitely be suitable for coyotes

When I was in training I never heard much about it being used out to 600 yards for accurate shots unless your talking about the BEATEN zone of the C9 lol. Most of the weapon;s I shot when I was in were never to accurate out to that range unless you got to shoot the sniper rifles ie C3A1 ect ect......and they were'nt in 223.
