I am looking for an action to build a 338Lapua Improved. I prefer a single shot over a mag fed.

I have checked on surgeon, stiller and timberwolf. Can anyone offer opinions on these??

Any others I should consider?

Thanks

Barnard would be one to look at, available in Canada easy to get no paper work & less time.
Robertson Composites are Canadian distribitor

Who's building your rifle for you? Might check with him and get a recommendation.

OK guys.. thanks for the recommendations but it isn't quite what I am looking for I need to know WHY one is better than another.

My friend always bugs me about his Dodge being better then my Ford. But it isn't until he explains the inline 6 haveing a longer stoke and fewer moving parts that I start to believe him..

So can you guys give me reasons as to why one is stiffer than another??

Thank You

All you guys are using some beautiful actions but here is another one the RUGER No.1!
If you want a bolt action absolutely also take a look at the McMillan Action they are not often seen here.

The Surgeon is the stiffest of the bunch. If they do not have an rail machined out of the body, its not in the same class of action. Surgeon is one nice action. Aren't PGW actions with integral rails?

We used to machine the rails integral. It was stopped because it was deemed not versatile enough for Military applications. There is no magic to doing it like this. Also as an FYI there is no way on earth a basically round Surgeon action is as stiff as a Timberwolf...

The current rail is affixed via a guide rib as well as five 10-32 screws. Pretty strong i'd say.

I think ALL the custom single shot actions of 1.55 diameter are stiff as hell. After lots of looking around and questions I went with the Barnard for my 7mm saum build. They are easy to get, good price and come with an awesome trigger. I just ordered a second one to build an ultra mag on.

There are actions with field tolerances and there are actions that are built to more Precision/benchrest tolerances.

Of the 3 you mention, I like the Surgeon the best having remington compatible components. I like the integrated rail and I generally like the fit and finish, but given the choice, I would choose a Barnard. It is a stout smooth action, I like the bolt release system and the options.

All the actions you mentioned very are good. No bad choices as far as I am concerned, but I think some of the Stillers are built with field tolerances. Not a problem at all, just different.

As far as I'm concerned when you start comparing these 3 actions and their "stiffness" you're splitting hairs. Given these 3 choices I'd stick with the one that's built right here in Canada. I've seen the Surgeon XL and I own a Timberwolf......I didn't see any visible differences in the fit and finish.
