$100,000 worth of rifles.

Very nice, buy if you can afford them why the hell not!

Interesting to see that even on such a class of rifle that a golden ring remains on the top of it...:)

That is one fine pair of rifles, however we need more details such as calibre, action, accuracy and so on.

Custom guns are a great thing and judging by the number of posts it gets some very specific opinions. I have made a choice to spend some money on a couple of rifles from a builder in the us. I have one complete and the other is a couple of years away. If I could afford it I would have the rifle completed faster but I am on a pay as I go deal.

To me the beauty of wood and the labour involved makes them special. I use my wood rifles on easier hunts to avoid serious damage and use my plastics for the hard hunts. To each there own. I am also lucky enough to not have to hunt with just one rifle!

In the summer of 99' I spent two months polishing metal for John Bolliger and was able to see first hand just how much labour - skilled labour goes into these types of rifles. It was a real priviledge and a hell of an eye opener as to be able to help this builder out. I can also say that his clients all use their rifles.

In order to offset these heavy costs I have been doing some of my own gunwork. I just don't set my finished work next to John's!

Dakota Model 76. Looks better, probably as accurate. $5000.

Leupold has a custom shop too.

The leupy's don't look custom...but whats a custom VX3 worth? $1000? Its still only 1/50th the price? Would you put a $100 scope on your $5000 rifle?

Surveys of custom rifle makers consistently show that the Leupold is the most popular choice. It turns out that many buyers look at the total package, and decide that taking everything on balance the Leupold is hard to beat at any price.
That doesn't mean that different scopes can't beat the Leupold on different points, but those voting with their thick wallets have already shown their preference. I suspect that the "American made" thing plays a part too.

True enough, I imagine that someone who can afford a rifle like this will not be looking for "The best bang for their buck". I'm sure that the scopes came as a recommendation from the rifle builder himself.

However, I would still compare this to buying a Cadillac equipped with re-treaded all-season tires on winter steel rims.

How are these $15K per:rolleyes:, much less $50 K:eek:. At even a generous estimate, I get $4400 per. Seriosuly, what makes 'em so special to warrant another $10,600 ?

McM Echolls stock - $600
M70 Action, trued and blueprinted $1500 (max)
Custom chambered barrel - $700
bottom metal - $300
Jewel (?) trigger - $300
custom rings/bases (or are they?)- $500
Gunsmithing - $500

Why would someone pay so stupid much for a Foose or a Shelby?
Because the work is the best that there is, it is in high demand, and Echols has a long waiting list. He does "80" things to the action alone. I think Leeper might get a good laugh at the "80" things though.
And obviously your Gunsmith isn't backed up until 2011 then eh?

If Shelby is the best there is then the US auto industry is in much worse shape than I thought...and I thought it was very bad indeed.

Neat thread though. You can tell hunting season is pretty much over.:)

It'll shoot just the same, and I save at least $10,000. Simple.

Beautiful guns, no doubt

It's just pretty status symbol like all the other stuff the rich and famous buy to make them feel like they are better classed than regular folk.
But the sad truth is their sh@t smells as bad as everyone else’s and their guns as pretty and expensive as they may be are not any better.

The 82 operations to the action was a misprint in a Barsness article. In actuality, someone followed him around the shop over a couple/few of days while he built one complete rifle. There were 82 separate steps performed to build the entire rifle from start to finish.

The funny part about this is that in reality at least 85% of the people on this forum wouldn't know the difference between these rifles and an off the shelf Winchester if it wasn't pointed out.
