Buying from US, Boarder Crossing and Registering handgun in canada?

Like other people said, just buy one here. I bought mine half a year ago $700 CDN (incld GST/PST) shipped to my door and it took a week. If you're that worried about the initial cost of owning a firearm, maybe the sport/hobby isn't for you as you will soon realize, the actual gun is the cheap part and ammo is $$$$$

Wow way to discourage a newbie! Why not let him know his other options like a .22lr, or start reloading instead of trying to scare him off? And people say I am a pesamist? Geeze.

I realise its an expensive hobby, learned that pretty quick by adding up the 2 courses I need to take, License fee, Needing to become member at a shooting range to buy, ATT, firearm fee, ammo fee - I know it's expensive, but that doesnt mean I won't try to save money where I can.

haha.

Not trying to scare him off, but it's the truth.

If the OP is that worried about saving $100 +/- a few dollars, then the OP is going to be surprised on how much accessories to enjoy this sport are.

ATT's are free... well at least in BC they are... so you wont have to worry about that. ;)

Question about getting it shipped to my door - Do I need to get an ATT BEFORE buying online, since technically i'm not transporting it yet?

No.

That's the beauty of it...
Call in credit card info and PAL # and in a few days a package arrives at your door.

Maybe he just wants to save a few hundred bucks that he can invest in ammo instead. Common advice on any shooting board says "instead of dumping tons of money on gadgets put it in your ammo til you can outshoot your new toy".

Seriously guys, the search on this board isn't the most intuitive, and if this thread keeps coming up maybe someone ought to pick the best one and stickie it. Saves everyone the grief.

You mean like the ones stickied over in legalese?

yea but its called the Newbie FAQ. Doesn't frequently asked questions mean they're supposed to come up often?

That and if I was new, which I was myself not too many week ago, I wouldn't exactly be diving right into the legalese forum. Sounds intimidating and full of annoyingly worded legal stuff.

Newbies tend to go to the section titled Newbie, and theres no reason you can't link to it from here. The Newbie FAQ stickie itself doesn't mention anything about guns from the US so maybe just incorporate this into the answers in there.

I'm just trying to be helpful cause I was this guy a few weeks ago and I didn't exactly find everythign I wanted right away. Its confusing, but not to someone whos been looking at this stuff for years. You know where everything is, but a new guy doesn't. And like I said the search isn't very smart cause most people don't realize it cuts your options down to 1 week or newer cause most boards don't do that in their search. most of the time I worry about my keywords.

I Live right on the Manitoba North Dakota border And have thought about importing a gun cross the border. Just to let you know DocShay Menkes cannot except guns. Any gun going through the mail system in the states has to be sent to an FFL dealer. The closest FFL dealer to Menkes is the guy who owns The Hemart in Cavalier which is 15 miles from Neche. I did talk to him and it sounds like with a little persuasion he would drive the gun to the border. It is pain to get guns across but it does work.

Thanks for the information, good to know.

PS this forum needs a "thanks" button ;)

I bought my Steyr M9A1 in Canada for $850
Regular price in the US was $450 and cheapest (membership required) was $350
I liked it, it fit great to my hand, I got it.
Since then I spent more on ammo.
No regrets!

Doc I hate to say it but there is a search function.. There are numerous posts covers the detalis on what is involved and the costs legally export a firearm from the US..

Tired, sore, old and Cranky.. But what else is new

If you would change the the smiley in your tag line from :) to :stfun00b: it would be perfect.

Just look in the exchange of pistols forum. You can get g-17s here between 525-650 bucks (with extras like mags and holsters). Its painless and you need to work on your trader rating anyway. I don't shop in the States anymore, at least not since Canada joined Al qaeda.
