Remington 770 disappointment.

So I've been wanting a decent entry level hunting rifle for a while now and finally went to buy one as a christmas present for myself on friday. I had my heart set on the Savage 111 package in 270 and to my disappointment my local gunshop had none. After exploring some other options (limited by my price range) I settled on the Remington 770 in 270 at what I thought was a pretty good deal. After a busy weekend I looked up some internet reviews of my new addition and to my horror find that I overspent on what is apparently the world's sh!ttiest hunting rifle.
Some people said that it's a decent work gun and shoots straight. I have not fired the gun yet as I have an oppurtunity to exchange the gun for the Savage and wait a week or two, or I could pick up a Steven's right away. I did however cycle about 12 unfired rounds through the action. I had two FTE's almost right away and had difficulty getting the bolt to close properly when chambering a round about 50% of the time. I feel like a jackass now for not buying the Steven's, I just assumed the remington was a better choice.
My questions are...Do I buy the Steven's or wait for the Savage? Or do I take the chance and see how the 770 shoots?

Sounds like a pretty good reason to me to take it back to the store ASAP.
 
Whilst Pharoah has a point, I wonder if he would buy the same firearm?

Swap it for either of the savages. You'l have a multitude of upgrade options down the line and the likelihood is that they will shoot good as is.

The Savages won't have the stigma for resale value either. I'd get rid while you have the chance.

EDIT: take heed of the lesson. You buys in haste you repents at leasure.
 
You got it now..shoot it. Sell it only if you are unhappy. If it genuinely has issues, take it back to the vendor for store credit towards your Savage or Stevens.

I had a 700 that didn't eject perfect all the time. A model 70 as well. (!) When you have a heavy bullet in the case most rifles won't fling an extracted cartridge clear accross the room. I'm also going to bet the chamber wasn't cleaned and was probably sticky. But I'm a stand up guy, I'll make the same offer I do to so many, send me your 770 and I'll send you an SKS. Still haven't had any takers. :)
 
Since you already have a fte problem, take it back. I think the guys that have said you should shoot in first didn't get that its failing to eject...I would take her back and go for either of the savages...or you're cash back since your product is defective.

You may not be able to return the rifle if you have fired it, some shops are picky about those things.
 
Hmm. Member since February of this year... Surely you would have performed the 'search' function here and seen the landslide of negative comments, reviews and first hand experiences with the 770. No? OOPS. Nothing that money won't fix.

Good luck and play safe. If you are going to return it, don't shoot it.

This is the same in my town. Hang out at the range. Get to know some guys and try their gear. I always let people try my stuff that is new to them. Even if I just met them. No sweat off my back, I just make sure they competent, safe and not going to hurt themselves or me.
 
The Savage/Stevens stands head and shoulders above the Remington. That Remington thought that the 770 would offer direct competition with the Savage/Stevens would be laughable if it weren't so sad.

Yours might not be AS bad as the stories you've surly read/heard about on the internet, but are you ever truly going to be happy with a gun you have doubts about?
