Remington 770 disappointment.

Hmm. Member since February of this year... Surely you would have performed the 'search' function here and seen the landslide of negative comments, reviews and first hand experiences with the 770. No? OOPS. Nothing that money won't fix.

Good luck and play safe. If you are going to return it, don't shoot it.

Honestly I'd never really heard anything about the 770 except what the guy at the gun store told me. He said the bolt was alot sloppier than the savage but that was really the only difference. I'm more into AR's and pistols, I only recently got my hunting licence, I don't know a great deal about hunting rifles but I've heard Remington has a great reputation.
I will not be shooting it and will be returning it ASAP. I think I'll excercise some patience and wait for the Savage in 270. Is the Stevens just as good though?

If the gun has functioniong problems take it back immediatly and demand at the very least a store credit. You gotta talk it up about the problems and sound damn beleivable and tell the store you refuse to take an unsafe firearm. Wait for a Savage you won't be dissapointed. You may consider a Marlin XL-7 as well.

By most accounts the 770 is a POS. I would take it back & wait for the Savage 111. I own one in .270 & find it a fine, accurate, entry level rifle. The scope on my package gun was a cheap but serviceable Simmons 3x9x40. It was the first thing I upgraded on this gun. IMHO you can't go wrong with the Savage.

I had a 700 that didn't eject perfect all the time. A model 70 as well. (!) When you have a heavy bullet in the case most rifles won't fling an extracted cartridge clear accross the room. I'm also going to bet the chamber wasn't cleaned and was probably sticky. But I'm a stand up guy, I'll make the same offer I do to so many, send me your 770 and I'll send you an SKS. Still haven't had any takers. :)

I already have an SKS, a Norinco, so I already have a beater gun that I don't care what happens to.

There is only one answer, if you have the option to return it, DO IT. The stevens or the savage are better buys. The Rem 710/770 are best described as Junk

Because if he tries it he can't go back and exchange it. A failure to extract has bugger all to do with the weight of the bullet and if a "sticky" chamber prevents extraction take it as a sign of PROBLEMS down the road.

Get rid of it if you have the opportunity.

+1

And I wouldn't be cycling any more live ammo through a rifle that has demonstrated issues either.

My + .02

NAA.

I wouldn't be cycling any live ammo through any gun unless I was pointed downrange at a gun range:eek: In the meantime, a buddy of mine just bought a 770 in 30-06. Came with a scope(low end, but functional) as well. I believe he paid about $460ish to $500 for it. I bore sighted it for him, and he's eating moose this winter;) Why don't you try it first, I know of a lot of guys that had the 710/770's and haven't had any trouble. If you are only going hunting every couple of years, it should outlive your grand children.

Take it back and pony up some extra cash for a Remington 700 SPS in .270 that I know you'll like, or go for the Savage.

The Remington 710/770 is a crappy rifle that is intended for the once a year hunter that probably will have rounds left over from his one box of cheapest factory ammo that he bought two years ago, who will go to the range, stick up a paper plate at 50 yards. Shoot an 8" three round "group" and then leave, figuring he's all set to go hunting.

The Stevens 200 is a superior rifle to the 710/770.

Do I buy the Steven's or wait for the Savage? Or do I take the chance and see how the 770 shoots?

YES! Buy the Stevens! My wife & I both have a Stevens 200, one in 308, one in 243. Both have Elite 3200 3-9x40mm scopes & BOTH shoot under 1 inch at 100meters!

Cheers
Jay
P.S. If someone hasn't already said it... The Stevens IS a Savage...

But I'm a stand up guy, I'll make the same offer I do to so many, send me your 770 and I'll send you an SKS. Still haven't had any takers. :)

Apples and Oranges, An SKS is a milsurp combat rifle, the remmy is a hunting rifle.

But to be fair you might want to reconsider shorting yourself in such a deal, as an SKS will generally feed, chamber, and fire with far less issues then what Remington is cranking out for rifles these days. :D

BTW I'll throw in another vote for the Savage rifles.

I bought brand new Rem 700 SPS in .223, and two days later I had to send it back to Remington factory...LOTS of issues with that crap...Not worthed any penny, I have Savage as well in .223 and is amazing how good and smooth is..

My advice: Go for Savage.

Even if the 770 does shoot okay for you, you'll never be truely happy with it. So just take it back. Honestly, I don't think you should get the Savage either. Your best bet will be to get the Marlin XL-7, or go to Tradeex.com and get a real gun made of real walnut and steel. Go through thier inventory and get a good .30-06 Husqvarna. Make sure the description says the bore is good and there is no crack in the stock [those with cracks are common]. If it says the crack is repaired well, then that's fine too. Those Husky's will outlast your great, great grandchildren, and they SHOOT!
