Got myself Remington 700 SPS Varmint.......And have problems ( Pics added)

This thread is depressing. I've got a brand new 700 sps varmint .243 in the safe and now I'm thinking the worst about it. Initial inspection looks good though.

This is only my second bolt rifle so just wondering how hard should the bolt be to close? To me my Stevens 200 feels quite smooth.

Not you in particular Jerry. I shot against factory and custom Savage builds at pretty much every match I attended this year, Mission, LMR at Vokes, Provincials and the Sierra and Frosty shoots here in town going up against guys who have been competing since I was in diapers (some even longer and back in diapers :D).

Believe me, with only 2.5yrs of comps under my belt I owe A LOT to the rifle.

Brand bashing will never end, no matter the subject Rem vs Sav, Ford vs Chev, Intel vs AMD it makes no difference.

Doesnt mean its bad rifle, Mine is surely lemon. Cycle few empty cartridges and see how it locks. Mine is for example so hard to lock that I have to use excesive force.

I really hope yours is good......

YOUR opinion is the one that counts.

If you posted a rifle with a McMillan stock, a Surgeon action, and a Krieger barrel topped by a $10,000 NightForce scope that cut 1/2" groups at 1000 yards on here somebody would find something wrong with it & try to "shoot it down".

I brought a Savage Model 116 in .30-06 Sprng. with a Bushnell 2.5 -10x40mm scope on it to the range this fall & plopped a box of 150 grain Remington Core-Lokts down on the bench beside it.

Some azzhole I know remarked, "Looks like you've been rifling through the garbage dumpsters again pricedo by the looks of that rig."

I fired 4 boxes of ammo with the largest 5 shot group @ 100 yards (to be completely fair all groups were shot off a "Caldwell Lead Sled") measuring just over 0.6" and laughed as "Big Mouth" with his Browning A-bolt in .308 Win. topped by a 3-9x40mm Leupold shot groups (handloaded 165 grain "Silver Ballistic Tips") off sand bags that barely stayed within a 4" circle claiming that "wind gusts";) were putting him off target.

Shows how an old guy with a "garbage dump rig" shooting "shytty shells" can sometimes put a BSer shooting a rig of a supposedly "higher pedigree" to shame.:rolleyes:
 
Cycled a few rounds through mine. Same issue as your's with the brass being shaved as the round slides forward out of the box. All else is good with mine, including the trigger.

I traded a shotgun for a new one in .22-250 last winter. I've put almost 500 rounds through it without failure. The action is butter smooth now. I liked it so much I bought another in .308 last week.

If you're talking about the Steven's ya I agree with you. Mines 22-250 as well and the action is very smooth, but the blueing sucks. Some spots on the action are very blotchy. I still love it and it shoots great even with my beginner hand loads.

The 700 finish is perfect as far as an SPS is concerned. I just smoothed out the rough edges on the action that were shaving my brass, much better now. This rifle won't be scoped until the spring so range tests are going to have to wait.

Yes, painfully and all the way down to the nerve....

If the gun was good, i shouldnt use that much force, and I should not get hurt by any means.
I know it sounds corny but its true. Action should be smooth, shooter should "feel" the action and get cmfortable cycling through...NOT excessive force resulting in damaged brass, broken nails, bleeding fingers, etc....

i have to ask, how is it even possible to brake a nail closing a bolt ?

i know if i need to push hard on a bolt i use the flat of my hand

Dont worry I have had 2 rem 700 sps in the last 2 years both are great and are tack drivers I had the same problem as SIN did but then i realized my scope mount screws were too long so i filed them down a liitle and now it cycles like a dream ....most problems can be fixed in a few minutes and most problems are due to user error.
 
My rifle is still at the Remington Centre in Quebec, it has been almost a month since I send it to them........

I hope thay can fix it....

Did you try the action and the trigger pull before you bought the rifle? I always try the action, examine the bolt, and dry fire before I buy, one time I went thru 3 before I found one that cycled well, trigger pull was not rough, and bolt didn't have burrs on the locking lugs... It's like buying anything examine it closely before you buy.

I have no brand loyalty, and it seems every maker is putting out the odd dud lately. Remingtons such as this, Weatherby/howa vanguard with scope base holes way off and tight chamber, Savage with little to know rifleing in the barrel, I got a Savage 17hmr as a "present" with some of the worst machining I have ever seen in the reciever, galled like you wouldn't believe!, Kimber with large burrs in the chamber... so they all seem to have a few dud's. It's how they deal with it that really matters.

I think I would be calling the service depot every day, since it's been a month already, and maybe a call to the head office.
 
Why couldn't this have been handled at the dealer level to begin with? On the few instances that I've been passed a new lemon by a dealer, I pass it back and get a new one and an apology. Isn't that why you buy new?

you hit the nail on the head. It will NEVER end.

All you hear is well my Savage out the box this, or my Tikka this, or Rem is a piece of S+++. Rem quality control what has happened to it?

It is no different than guys and there 4x4 pickups and why they feel the need to put them BIG A++ mudders on them or them NOISY exhaust systems.

We will choose to buy what we want when we want and do what we have to so they are better even if they are not perfect from new.

Once a rifle has been registered and shot the store has no obligation to take it back....If they do take it back is because they have great customer service and are going above and beyond what they have to do unfortunately not many gun shops have good customer service anymore.

I went back to Le Baron and asked for another piece, but the gentelman there said and pointed on receipt" All Firearms are FINAL SALE" so the only thing they offered to me, is to let them send rifle to Quebec for" Fixing" or replacing...its been almost a month since then......

Ill wait and see...
 
Looks like I will drop the extra money and buy a t3 varmint in .223.The finish all round
on that sps varmint sucks on all the componets. All the rc mausers I've seem have better
finish pitting and all.
