1911's... Which one?

Colt 1911s are supposed to have the lowest repair/returns rate in the USA.

Dan Wesson probably offers more 'features' for the money, and they are very nice pistols. But with all 1911 brands, you're still comparing to Colt. ;) How can you compare without having the original first?

I like lot's of 1911, but my favourites still say "Hartford, CT" on the frame. If I already had a Colt, I'd buy a Dan Wesson.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me which company's are better to buy from? Looking to buy a 1911 style .45 any thoughts?

My choice was Springfield and I'm very happy. Colt was overpriced, Kimber had reported issues, considered Para, Norc, STI, S&W, and a few others, but not Dan Wesson. Springfield had the best price/quality ratio.

Right now I'm thinking about Rock River... but have no cash for it.

Combat Experience with the .45 ACP

Oft times, comments on this net are about GySgt. Carlos Hathcock’s sniping adventures in Vietnam. Here’s one that very few know about, but is probably just as good as far as accuracy during combat is concerned.
A Navy SEAL Team was returning from a mission over North Vietnam in a chopper when it got hit pretty bad. The pilot and one crew member were killed and the copilot was wounded. Going into autorotation, the copilot managed to set the chopper down in a clearing. After landing, a few rounds of enemy fire were starting to come in. Seems the M60s were also damaged beyond use by the crash landing and initial RPG hit, the only M16 fell out on the way down.

The only firearms left was M1911s.The remaining crew member was carrying a match conditioned M1911 and had a few boxes of ammo. As more enemy small arms fire started coming in, the copilot and crew member also noted that the VC were coming out of the jungle and approaching them; shooting as they came. The crew member took out his .45 and took careful aim as he shot at each attacking VC. About 30 minutes later it was all over. Between reloading magazines and radioing for rescue, the copilot was pretty busy, but a rescue chopper finally arrived on the scene.

As the rescue chopper came in and landed, its crew noticed a lot of dead VC laying around. The downed helo’s remaining crew were picked up and on their way out, they counted the dead VC; 37 in all. Their distances from the downed helo were from 3 to about 150 yards; all shot by the crew member with his M1911 .45 ACP. About 80 rounds were fired by Petty Officer R.J. Thomas, a member of the USN Rifle and Pistol Team.

Petty Officer Thomas was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor, but by the time the recommendation got all the way up through the chain of command, the recognition was reduced to the Navy Cross.

This incident has been cited this as the only known of example of top-level combat marksmanship since SGT Alvin York’s escapades in WWI.

This is my favorite Colt story by far!

Cheers.................
Own a COLT, own a legend!!
Great true story Brutus!

omg i was searching this thread to see if ANYONE would say COLT!!! lol
good on you, i JUST got my Colt Gold Cup Trophy in the mail today :D so so so happy, slide is tight like a virgin, trigger as hard as a wet nipple.

and it doesn't matter if it's a gold cup or even a 1991A1, colt is it baby :D

:stirthepot2:

I just ordered a Stainless COLT Gold Cup Trophy from Arms East to go with my COLT Special Combat Government. I like your description of the slide and trigger. Hope mine is the same.

How does yours shoot?

+1......

kimber is my choice

Kimber cant be beat for fit, finish, accuracy etc. For the money, I dont think that you can get a better pistol.

Stay away from Smith 1911, they feel cheap and thrown together. If you want to start cheaper, get a Kimber Custom II in either black or stainless. You should be able to get one for under $1000.00.

Gord.

Don't know why anyone would buy a Kimber that doesn't work from the factory and the owner didn't want to send it back because it'll take 6 months to fix.

Only Kimber I wanted was the Warrior/Desert Warrior, because of the lack of firing pin block. Holsters were hard to find until recently.

Now STI on the other hand has great support from Freedom Ventures, and most people that owns one shoots the hell out of them.

And Colts, they were cool like 50 years ago?

Just ignore my comments... lol.

I own a Marvel Limited Custom that built on a SA 1911. While it may not be the pretiest shooter, it shoots freakishly well.

For looks and value STI makes some good pistols!

too bad they don't ship to Canada. Brownells has everything you need, and they DO ship gun parts to Canada without needing a permit, as long as the order doesn't exceed $100 usd.

Too bad they don't ship here. What I would really like is a set of those real ivory COLT presentation grips, and thought they might offer them there.
How does your new Gold Cup Trophy shoot? Your description of it made me order one!

it's fantastic, i would compare it to my ex-sti executive, except a lot more affordable, and it's a colt ;)

lol you ordered one because of that description? well then, this is a heads up to all the dealers in here, if you want to move your products, use my description lol

hope you enjoy your colt, and never sell it, even if you don't use it that much, just don't sell it. i swore to never sell that gun, ever.

It all depends on the features you want, fixed sights/adjustable sights. Ambi safety/single safety. 9mm/40S&W/10mm/45acp. Blued/stainless. Government/Commander length. Big things is service or warranty works should you need it. I think most will agree that when you take all of these factors into consideration, STI is your best bet for a new 1911 in Canada and the Trojan in particular is the lead model. With Freedom Ventures, you will have no worries about getting the gun the way you want it and the service if you need it. Sean is a first rate dealer and man of his word and sells a first rate product. I would give him a call and talk to him, let him know what you are looking for and he will set you up with the perfect 1911.

I have no experience with Freedom Ventures or STI but I totally agree with your point about buying from someone who will support the product.
Paid big bucks for a Wilson combat and their lifetime warranty/support is pretty much nil from my end. The gun has been flawless but I can see from my experience in trying to buy a pair of factory grips that if there was a problem I would pretty much be on my own.

They will not even ship grips or grip screws to Canada let alone anything else if the need arrises. I`ve had a pair of factory grips/grip screws on order with the Wilson Combat Canadian dealer since April/9/09.

ozz, try brownells, they ship to canada, as long as the order is less than 100 usd. they are great for bits and pieces, and they do have grips as well.

Virtually impossible to argue with.

I would vote for STI, as far as target shooting is concerned they are a good buy. I traded a Colt series 70 for an STI Spartan, and love it.

Unfortunately Brownells does not carry the ones I wanted. Wilson G10 flat black/gray starburst pattern grips.
