Best way to get a 9.3x62 for me...

So, somewhere along the lines I got the idea in my head that a need a 9.3x62. I'm not really sure why...but when there's a chance of getting a new rifle, do you really need a reason? ;) If I didn't have a rifle pictured in my head, it'd be as simple as picking up a Husky in 9.3x62, and calling it a day. My requirements are:

-Peep sight
-22" tube
-Mannichler stock
- Butterknife bolt handle

From my looking around, it looks like I'm going to have to order the Butterknife bolt handle from Brownells? I was thinking for the stock, I'd order from Richards Micro-Fit. I see they're gotten some negative reviews, but it seems like the problems are just needing minor woodwork done, which isn't a problem.

If you're still with me, I guess my next question is what would you base your platform off of? Originally I was going to order a Husky from one of the dealers on here, and modify it to fit my criteria. However, I've heard of some people re-barreling both the Stevens 200 or the new Marlin XL7.

My goal is to keep this project under $1000, and which my initial guesstimates at things, it looks like this is possible. Any suggestions? Am I out to lunch? Is this possible? How would you guys and girls do it? Thanks,

I would get a new CZ full stock in 9.3x62, put a removeable NEG CZ peep sight onto the dovetail, change the bolt handle to a spoon type and your done.

And you most likely will want a NECG/CZ front site insert as the CZ front site sucks just like the the Ruger front sites..
 
There are several ways to go, including an M98 from Trade-ex. The big problem is your budget of $1000. I think you will be probably $400-500 for a barrel, including chambering, bluing and installation. Then the bolt handle needs to be blued and installed (plus the purchase price). The wood, well I guess it depends on what type and quality of wood you fancy for this project. I think even a fairly plain mannlicher stock in English walnut will run $168 for an old classic in select grade (very plain). A nice checkering job will be $200. Don't forget the cap (plus bluing) for the end of the wood (at the muzzle), and a recoil pad.

You will still need to put some serious elbow grease into the stock, although that is quite fun, imo.

It all adds up!
 
These are my "rough" prices if I went the Tradeex route

Husky Sporter would run about $350
Mannichler stock $136
Williams FP Peep $50
Cut/Crown Barrel $75
Timney trigger $50
Butterknife handle $30

So that looks like about $700, plus shipping for all of those. My current 06' doesn't have a checkered stock, and while it would be nice, I don't think it necessarily needed.

So what I didn't factor in was the shipping, bluing of the bolt handle and the cap.

Will what are called "Husky Sporter"'s be fine for my action choice? I obviously plan on reloading, but I don't plan on hotrodding, so I'm guessing that if it comes chambered in that calibre, I'd be ok with this action? In my mind this is a 100 yard Moose thumper.

Decelerater - $46
Swivels installed - $21

That would bring me up to just over $200 for my stock?

So about $760 is what I get from this. I'm not trying to avoid the guys saying the CZ 550 (which is a gorgeous rifle), and I guess I should've been more clear in my first post, but I was thinking it would be easier on the bankbook if I could go piece by piece instead of one lump sum.

Exactly. Plus most of the ones I have seen on that site have dark, but usable bores. You will end up spending similar money for a well worn "custom" as a new CZ.

Yes, but from what I see on their site, if it is a M98 it will say that. Most others are M96's. Not sure if the 9.3x62 was ever chambered in a 96 anyway...

Tell them you want the best bore they've got. No sense in buying a worn out one like 1899 has pointed out...
 
I have an M96 from Trade X in the form of a Stiga, these are beautiful rifles, mine fortunately for me came in 98% condition, looks like it was never fired. If you are going to buy factory ammo this new stuff sometimes is a tad to long to fit in these M96. I really perfer my M96 over a M98 for some strange reason? You are better off saving your money for a CZ Mannlicher, if you spend the time and money investing in this project you will be farther behind in time and money! Put those pennies away till you have enough, I know this is hard for us Rifle Loony's. This does make an excellent 100 yrd. moose gun and has more resale value in the end, I did something similair in 35 Whelan and could maybe recover half my costs. Just my 2 cents worth, but either way this is an awsome moose buster cartridge, good luck Dale in T-Bay:D
 
I priced out converting a M98 and in the end it was well over $1000. As above, start with the CZ and you will be farther ahead.

If you go for a M98, you can get Hyem contoured, treaded and short chambered barrels from Bits of Pieces.

The early 649 was a straight wall M94 in 9.3 x 62.

I was actually just looking at the BOP website and was wondering what the general opinion was on Heym and Montana barrels?

If you plan on reloading,why not go with a model 46 in 9.3 x 57? Plenty of info about them and HVAs on the Swedish board at gunboards.com.

If you look,you can find next to unused guns there. I've bought many of them from Anthony. Everyone has been better than the pictures and description.
 
one other option that i did with my ruger 77 rsi 243 that i wanted changed to 7-08 was to have ron smith rebore it,very accurate and reasonably priced with out all the rebarreling hassles . this depends how much you like your 30-06 in its present state. the decision for me was easy as i all ready had a 77 rsi in 250 sav. and i had lost faith in the 243 . it also saves you the price of the rifle .have fun with your project
