Is this going to be a problem my friend seems to think so.

I will be getting the membership very soon.

As far as i remember i only need to have a gun club for ATT's, and if its couriered right to my door i don't need a ATT for that either. Am i right?

The transfer might be on hold until you fax them a club membership though.
I don't think you need a ATT if it is shipped to your door as you are not transporting anything.

Got this from the RCMP website.

Q. Do I need authorization to transport my firearms from one location to another?

Any time you personally transport a restricted or prohibited firearm within Canada, you need an Authorization to Transport (ATT) from the Chief Firearms Officer of the province where the firearm is located or where it will be entering Canada. You do not need an ATT for firearms that are being shipped by licensed carrier or for non-restricted firearms that you are transporting yourself.

Just talked to the Alberta CFO today over the same issue. If you are buying the restricted as a "target shooter" rather than as a "collector", then you have to belong to a range to aquire more (I already have several restricteds and just bought a new P226R Combat and was given that line). Just support the local range today and buy a membership and everyone wins.

But my friend thinking of going for a certain gun club and this club needs u to sit through orientations and apply. And i currently have no time to do those atm. And i dont really want to go spend hundreds of dollars at a club i wont use.

Join a club and make the CFO happy. They want you to have the gun...but they have rules to follow.

the shooting edge in calgary has an associate membership. i paid $40 for mine last year.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about this very subject lately. "Forcing" me to get a gun club membership violates my rights under charter, ie my right to free association or rather in this case, my right not to associate. I played with the CFO over this a couple of years back and demanded to know exackly why I was being asked to produce something that he had already obligated me to maintain, a club membership, via my ATT which states it is only valid if I have a membership. The reply, after several months, and me refusing to take phone calls from him as I demanded his reply in writing was, We are not picking on you, we are making everybody do it. I might just hit him with the Charter argument and see if I can make him blink this year! I lovr screwing with pensil neck geeks!

This is kinda of retarded, no were on the websites or the CFP books for transfers does it say anywhere about having to have a membership.

I know its a requirement for the ATT but not transfers.

I live in Edmonton, so a Calgary membership is kinda impractical.

the idea would be that you spend the $50 to be able to obtain your restricted pieces before you get the membership to the range of your choice. it would be impractical to even get the license for you though, i f you dont come this way often. maybe phoenix or wild west offers a similar membership.

it really comes down to if you want to spend the money. i had already dropped a mint, so another $40 to get them in a timely fashion wasnt the end of the world.

The $50 basically just gives you a "membership" aka a piece of paper saying you are a member of The Shooting Edge "club". This was put in place so people just like yourself can purchase restricted/prohibited firearms. The membership gives you no benifits at the range, it simply allows you to make those purchases. What I am saying here is it really doesn't matter if you live in Calgary or not. If you need a club membership quick to buy a gun, pay the $50 for the piece of paper and fax it in!

You sure the CFO won't be a #### and say no, because I live in Edmonton and the club is in Calgary? And how am i suppose to get it?

They can't. A membership is a membership. You can have a standing range ATT for any distance.

Problem Solved everyone!!!

I turns out that most ranges have an association to clubs, and the Phoenix range here in Edmonton has one with the shooters guild for 30 bucks.

:D
