FR-8 Spanish Mauser 7.62x51

Proud to say I have a mint condition one I bought a while back.

Fun little rifle...

Thought about selling it/trading it before... Its a safe queen mostly now though, keep it for unique ### appeal.

I owned an FR8 and fired about 250 rounds out of it over 2 years. The 7.62 x 54mm mil round is a bit stronger than the supposedly equal civilain .308 winchester round. I used both. The FR 8 will maintain your attention, they kick like a mule. As for accuracy I wasn't impressed one bit, but that was one rifle only of that configuration. I did not keep it for that reason.
The machining work is rough, the bolt action is equally un-enjoyable. There are a lot better milsurp to be had that are enjoyable shooting, the FR8 is not one of them. My recommendation is to take a pass on the FR8.

I can only re-iterate what's been posted. The FR8 makes a great "truck gun". These inexpensive rifles can be had for less than $200. Bought mine for $125 and it had an as new bore.

The flash hider is simply an HK hider as found on any G3/91/93/HK33 series of rifle, therefore it accepts an AR plastic muzzle protector to keep the dirt out. Same as the rear diopter sight, very HKish size of aperture.

Of course the HK sling, which is one of the best ever developed, can be utilized, as seen in the pic.

I found a 98 bolt and checked it with some head space gauges. So I like the turned down handle. The only cosmetic "professional" stock work needed was a bit of the wood had to be cleared under the knob. It didn't bug me to do my own "custom gunsmithing". I've seen guns that have had the issued bolt knob turned down as well. That works, I just got lucky and found the K98 bolt that fit, and was cheap.

It's fed and fired any military or commercial 7.62x51 or 308 win round I've stuck in it with acceptable fist size accuracy at 200 yds. My 4 year old son says the recoil is a bit of a push, but I don't notice anything.

It uses old FNC1 stripper clips nicely, so I keep an ex CF pouch avec 50 rounds on clips together along with the bayonet as a take everywhere with me, package. If it gets banged up/dented/scraped, a bit, I ain't going to cry.

In case of attack, I keep the bayonet handy so I can go over the top and do a charge.

Not knowing much about these rifles, I am curious why these bolt actions have a tube sort of thing under the barrel, something you might see in a M1 , M14 or other like semi-autos. Unusual to see on a bolt action, since it does not use recycled gas to cycle the action.

Pretty sure its only there to hold the bayonet.

I have a FR-8. bought it at Centurey International for $69. I love it. The rear sight clicks around from 100 to 400 metres. It is a great plinker with surplus military ammo.

The front sight post screws up and down for zeroing elevation, and is offcentre with the threaded base, so it moves left and right for fine tuning the left -right zero.

I should have bought 20 of them. What was I thinking??

Much prefer it to the jungle carbine.

Alright... I dont know where you guys are getting these prices (~$69-$200)....or how long ago... but where can I find one of these right now?

Probably not going to happen at those prices in this day and age. The current market prices seem to be around the $500 mark, plus or minus depending on condition. Watch the EE like a hawk because they don't hang around long, but do turn up from time to time. There was a mint one on the EE just this past week but it looks like some bugger has snatched it up.

Hmph I wonder who this lucky bugger might be...

But, where the HECK are you guys finding these 1-200$ fr8's. Took me nearly half a year to find the one I wanted, and it definately wasn't that cheap. Mind you it was unfired when I bought it...nicest one you'll ever see.

Then again.........there's a lucky bastard round here............;)

It's a handy place to put things. Originally held the cleaning kit.

There was a post about the FR7 years ago. The rifle was NOT rechambered. What they did was to bore out the chamber and then insert a plug chambered to 7.62. A failure happened because the gas etched a void in front of the plug at the thinnest part of the barrel, leading to a failure of the barrel at that point.
