I agree. Rugers, especially in .22 rimfire, will always by my first choice. I got my 57 VTR working quite well now but I don't think that I should have had to do so much to it when it was brand new just to make it work. From what I learned from many members of this board, I found it easier to fix the problem myself than wait for Remington to maybe fix it not to mention the cost of shipping and waiting. Remington should be embarassed.

Lets not start a panic here fellas,,,,, its only the 17. caliber models that are affected.
I bought a VTR over the holidays, it seems really smooth and well put together, however, when I took it apart to camo it, the ejection port side plate was two big to go back in.
I popped it off and had to grind it to make it fit again??????????? QC issues maybe? Going to fire it this week, lets hope she functions well.

All you have to do is adjust the bolt guides and clean an lubricate it properly see link http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67177 From what I hear Remington has now improved quality control. just put about 500 rds through mine yesterday in sub zero weather 0 I mean 0 issues and it is every bit as accurate as my buddies 10/22. I don’t know about you but when price is compared to ruger or Nordic builds 386.00 for the VTR verses 600.00 - 1000.00 plus for the ruger I’ll keep the money and wait for the sig then give the VTR to my kids. Lets face it the ruger and the Remington’s look like what they are poor copies. The price of the Sig should be comparable to the ruger and on cool factor alone sig has them both beaten hands down. I only hope that it will be unrestricted and function as well as their hand guns which I have tried and love.

I did strip and clean it. If it had been only the one problem I would have looked in to fixing it, but when the trigger broke I said screw it.
Never owned one. Have a CZ452, 9422, Cooey 64A and a Henry Martini. Guess I am not in the market.Mine all work and shoot quite well if not extremely well. Read lots of #####in on this site tho. Guess I will have to pass. But then I sold my 1022 cuz I got bored with it and got tired of trying to make it accurate. The 9422 blew it out of the park first time I took it out and sold the 1022 a week later.

Got it back today with a new trigger group, no mention of the light strikes. I'll have to make a trip to the range tomorrow to see what happens.

I'd rather not have the bolt hold up last shot and have a good/realiable gun. IMO most people make too much of last shot hold open too......its not like your taking your .22 to war and even if so it takes an exta 3rd of a second to pull it back yourself.
I've got a customer with a 597 VTR and hes having tonnes of issues, all of which seem to be ammo or magazine related and have been covered here. Still, if hes unhappy, im unhappy. A neat little package but for the headaches I feel the 10/22 is the better choice. Anybody able to shed some light on the .17 recall? I only ask because ive got a friend with one and he LOVES it, still shooting it despite the recall, I know, I know. Dont flame me for his choice.

Alot of guys who have the 597 VTR say it is a GREAT gun its only the mags that suck! Well the magazine is a BIG part of the gun and when Remington made magazines for their OWN gun suck isn't that saying something? Just my 2 cents

I own a Ruger K10/22T, a 597 varmint/target, and a Thompson Centre R55 Benchmark.
I love my Ruger 10/22. The rotary mags are fantastic and it's very accurate. I replaced the rail with a one piece Leupold and had the trigger worked on. A great little rifle and very reliable with the factory mags.
The 597. Worked perfect for me. However some of the mags I bought don't seat properly. Also this rifle was very ammo sensitive. I've since changed the rail to a Leupold one piece like the one on my Ruger. I could tolerate the Ruger rail, but the Remington one I just didn't trust. I'll have to see if there is any improvement. Fixing the trigger will be next.
The Thompson Centre. Best out of the box semi. The trigger is a bit heavy but beats the heck out of the other two for a stock trigger. The quality overall is better. Also it's extremely accurate and less ammo sensitive than the other two. The only flaws are the cheap pistol grip cap and butt plate. These shouldn't be cheap plastic. However the rest of the rifle is metal including the trigger assembly unlike the new Ruger and Remington rifles.

i removed mine ...who cares.,,since i put a laminate stock it would not camber a round from fresh mag so out it went
i tuned it to perfection...never a jam or anything
it just takes a little time and patience. makes it more fun and puts personality in the gun
When I purchased my 597VTR it wouldn't go through a full magazine without misfeeding, jamming or light striking half a dozen times or more. Absolute POS. Then I looked on Rimfire Central website and saw that the biggest issue with these guns is probably the overtightening of the guide rods (discussed earlier in this thread ( http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...ad.php?t=67177 ) I was going to do this myself but the other day I stopped by my local gunshop and was reminded that he is an authorized Remington warranty depot. Since I know my gunsmithy limits are easy met I left it in his capable hands. George refaced the breech, recut the chamber, recut the extractor groove, replaced the extractor, firing pin and two action springs. Lot of work for a brand new gun. As someone else mentioned earlier I hope their quality control has inproved.
Went to range today and went through 200 rounds of Federal bulk pack ammo and another 50 CCI Minimag stuff without one glitch.
Can even get 32 rounds in one of the two mags.

I've had one for a few months and after I installed the Volquartsen hammer this thing runs like a charm. Factory 10 rnd mags work like a charm however i found that when you put more than 25 into the "banana" the first round doesnt want to feed
