It depends on what you want to do with the guns. I could get along with as few as 5 and still do everything I want. But having a few more gives me more variety and back-ups if something needs an extended visit to a gunsmith.

Never enough. My collection is still small by growing and it will grow significantly when I get rifles for the kids... someday...
Plan on having a whole closest designated for gun storage... actually rather a reloading room with them all upright along a wall in some sort of clear display case would be perfect!

I always seem to "need" one more than I have at any given time.
If you have more than 10 you are required to allow inspection of your storage in the same way that a Collector is. It doesn't mean you become classified as a Collector, just that the rules for allowing inspection, which put a bit more onus on the Collector than other owners, will apply to you, too.
It doesn't necessarily mean that you are more likely to be chosen for an inspection - that's determined by the whim of your CFO or by someone calling in a complaint or information that your storage isn't correct. As far as I can tell, very few Collectors have their storage inspected.

I need a few 22 rimfires. They don't count as they're toys.
Then a really good centerfire 22 that is easy on barrels and cheap to shoot. A 223 works for me.
Then an all around deer and sheep rifle; one rifle can do both. Throw in a thumper on the top end and I'm good.
Beyond that I'm more interested in a small number of really nice customs than I am in filling the closets with untold numbers of mediocre factory rifles in 270, 7mag, 30-06, 300whatever mag, etc. I learned a long time ago that mediocrity and redundancy in rifles doesn't make me happy and they don't stay long. Come to think of it that goes for rimfires as well.
Give me 10 or so and I'm pretty happy. But they're not 10 cheap rifles!

My thoughts exactly.
When I have money in my life I tend to buy guns to go with the ammo I find deals on from time to time.
And so far with my wife also having her PAL we can't get below a dozen rifles. And every time I sell one at the gun store on consignment I seem to come how with another... I swear those gun pimps stack the racks just for me when I walk in to pick up the cash.
