Yeah, and practice with whatever firearm gets it done in your mind, from whatever ready position/carry/ lug around/haul/ you may devise to have a long gun with you 24/7 while doing anything other than hunting in the woods, Because from most carries, a long gun is about 40 yards full out charge away from making the nice loud bang that is so heartening, until you discover that in your haste, you missed.
The safety mavens who carry pumps with an empty chamber frequently also carry them with the slide lock engaged. It is probably a 100 yard charge before that light comes on! A muzzle up carry takes some contortions to present, and an African muzzle down tempts fate with a plugged barrel.
And, the on/off switch in any bear which would not be deterred by pepper spray is pretty small. Bears are not intellectual giants, their frontal skull does a so-so job of deflecting bullets, and heart/lung shots will kill, but not stop. (At least, not until after playing kissy face with your handsome mug, or simply knocking your noggin right off your shoulders. ) Dying bears are way tougher than we are, and charging bears move most amazingly quickly. Practice, practice, practice.
