Who is Gerry Shelton?

Here is his website:

BTW I have this one:

And it has a very interesting account of a woman traveling in the arctic, and how she wards off a Polar bear attack.

IMHO they should be mandatory reading for anyone going into bear country.

Where did you guys get those books?

I might to give em a look over

Also, where can one find those, "paper bear charging targets"

I got mine while taking a trip on the BC ferries.
But I'm sure you could order direct, of check out a place like chapters.

If you get really stuck, let me know and I'll look for a copy for you.

The charging 'dwarf' bear targets are made by Martin Archery Inc. and available at many archery shops. They tend to be $$.

I buy them by the hundreds and the cheapest I have found is at Golden Arrow Archery in Regina.

Cheers

Cardboard boxes from places that sell fridges are often free and make good targets, get creative with a sharpie pen. :D

Yeah, and practice with whatever firearm gets it done in your mind, from whatever ready position/carry/ lug around/haul/ you may devise to have a long gun with you 24/7 while doing anything other than hunting in the woods, Because from most carries, a long gun is about 40 yards full out charge away from making the nice loud bang that is so heartening, until you discover that in your haste, you missed.

The safety mavens who carry pumps with an empty chamber frequently also carry them with the slide lock engaged. It is probably a 100 yard charge before that light comes on! A muzzle up carry takes some contortions to present, and an African muzzle down tempts fate with a plugged barrel.

And, the on/off switch in any bear which would not be deterred by pepper spray is pretty small. Bears are not intellectual giants, their frontal skull does a so-so job of deflecting bullets, and heart/lung shots will kill, but not stop. (At least, not until after playing kissy face with your handsome mug, or simply knocking your noggin right off your shoulders. ) Dying bears are way tougher than we are, and charging bears move most amazingly quickly. Practice, practice, practice.

i think it works under certain circumstances, I saw a biologist on tv spray in the direction of curious grizzlies, the hissing and red cloud scared them off, I doubt it stops a charge.

Was that the fella who was living in Russia and warding off aggressors from the younger bears he was studying? I saw that too... had me on edge

i heard a funny story , probably a bush urban legend. a helicopter pilot flies some european tourists out to a remote area and as hes leaving he notices them rolling on the ground in agony , so he comes back to investigate. turns out they thought it was to be used like bug repellent ! funny if true.
