S&W Mdl 49 vs 38SP+P

According to the serial number your revolver was made in 1987 and since it has a steel frame it should be OK for +P ammo, it is usually the alloy framed revolvers that are not recommended for +P ammo.

I shoot some in my M38 Airweight Bodyguard - you won't want to shoot very much of it at a time...;)

:agree: It sounds good, even looks good on paper but it's an ugly, ugly thing in person. Not as bad as firing the 640 in 357 mag (which is absolutely the worst recoil I've experienced - and I've shot Desert Eagles 50 and a 308 cal hunting pistol), but closer than most people want to get. (depending on the grips you're using, you can expect to bruise your hand)

And the cylinder will loosen up in no time.

It's not for nothing that Smith & Wesson tells you not to do it.

I wouldn't give it a steady diet, but occasional use should be just fine. - dan

+1 on a steel frame gun.

+P on an airweight J frame S&W is a big no-no.
