.308, 00 buck, or slug for grizzly?!

If you actually are forced to defend against an attack, caliber or type of gun is not nearly as important as actually knowing how to use whatever gun your are holding AND having the minerals to use it well. A 308 isn't going to give you bigger balls than a 45/70.

enough with the 'its not the calibre, its the shooter' comments.

i get the picture already. it was only insightful the first 100 times it was posted.

i practice with my firearms at every opportunity i can. i will be doing everything i can to improve my marksmanship whether i camped or not.

lay off of the juvenile noob comments already.

is it really a big deal that i have a social life and have felt the carress of a woman?

sorry for not having 5000 posts on an internet forum. im too busy enjoying my life to worry about my e-cred.

Buddy what you've done with your mother is none of anyone's business.
There are no "finger puppet" smilies here, so I'll 'splain. On any gun forum, bear threads are a good time and the person posting usually gets served a little humble pie, which is why I tagged this one, lucky for you most of the CGN comedians were elsewhere Take it for what it's worth. I hate to get into a pizzin' match with fellow shooters, we have bigger fish to fry.
Now if you're really serious about giving ol' Grizz the lights-out treatment buy a rifle in a manly caliber like a .375 H&H magnum. I have a really nice one for sale.

82 posts and this has been posted a 100 times? I'll never understand the "new math".

Listen, you're obviously not handling the pressure of a world famous CGN bear defense thread very well so I thought (and rightly so) that you need to focus less on finding a caliber to adress your anxiety and more on developing a coping mechanism for those moments when things actually are serious.

perhaps you should shut your computer off and step out into the real world for a while, mr 15 1000 posts.

i could see the forum getting a bit repetitive for you.

Thanx for the suggestion but if I wanted amateur life coach advice I would ask for it, and yes these weekly troll posts are getting a bit repetitive. :D

And from what I can tell so far if your this stressed about the Internet you are going to be bear food in a real attack.

Just please have someone vid tape it for youtube as I'd love to post that link as a follow up. :D

an old oufitter told me that it depends on whether you're lookin for grizzly or just defending- just defending, 12 guage with slugs- in a double, sxs- ie a "coach gun"- if you're looking for bear, 348 winchester - ie the model 71- now he was on horseback- i use a 338 win mag with 275 grain slugs- and i'm about 400 yards out

When hunting bears grizz or black 338 Win Mag...

When hiking/fishing/berry picking in the W.Koots a Marlin Guide Gun in 450 Marlin...

With your options the .308 and Barnes 180 grain TSX.

12 gauge slug would work just fine......I think they even have bonded ones if your worried about penetration. I wouldn't though, 300grs of lead in its face will surely stop it from eating you :).

7.62...... by 39, aha sks baby, no real experience with it for big bears but its a good bush gun considering it costs almost nothing, thers pictures out there from the 80's with a dead moose and a sks beside it, and i dont know cause i didnt hunt in the 80s, i barely lived then, but im pretty shure they didnt have soft points for em back then, i myself nicked the top off of one with wire cutters and shot it into a wet phonebook backed with many jugs of water. jacket separated from the steal easily ans both pieces looked mangled.

i trust it, give me a reason why not to?

Do you need help tying your shoes in the morning?

would you be confident using a 180 gr .308 to drop a grizzly?

what about a 3" 00 buck or a high velocity slug in a 12ga?

its for camping. one in a billion chance of needing it and it probably wouldnt even be handy at the time, but if it ever happened i would be kicking myself in the rear for not having one with.

Is money an issue? do you own a .308 and or 12ga?
If you don't own either and money is an issue the shot gun is very versatile and if you want to take a few birds while your camping and not have to deal with gutting a big animal (mind you, you can take larger game with a shotgun too) If you're only concerned with defence a shot gun with telescoping or flip up stock would be very portable and storable. Just make sure you keep your shells in good order as they can corrode quick if left in the right environment for too long.
If you're set on the .308, having a short barreled gun and setting it up with a low magnification scope forward of the action or with ghost rings (or both) will give you a fast target acquisition for a defensive situation. Reading Jeff Cooper's ideas on the scout concept might prove to be an interesting read for you. While I don't think he talks about bears you can see a lot of transferable concepts in his ideas.

12 gauge slugs have been proven not to penetrate as well as rifle bullets. A 12 gauge would be an ok choice for bear defence, as you are not really trying to kill the bear, as much as you are trying to get it to go away. This does leave a mess for someone else to clean up. I'm not sure why all the .308 talk. Most of us live in Canada. A .303 done properly, with a 22" or even 20" barrel, a good synthetic stock, and either open or low power scope, and of course, the 10 shot mag, would prove to be very lethal bear defence, and would serve more than one purpose. It would be about the same cost as a decent 12 gauge, as well as about the same weight. It would more than likley kick less, and be easier to shoot than the average slug gun as well. Just sayin'

do not resort to personal insults about people's mothers.

especially online, weak sauce.

what your guys thoughts on bird shot for the first one, to get him good in the face and eyes,... then 2 slugs..? :D

No, what you want to do is load #1 with buckshot, since the bear will be running towards you and you want ot be able to hit it with the pattern.

Then follow up with birdshot to the face, this will blind him.

Then you give him a slug, while he is running around blind

I'm serious...

LOL! stressed from a message board? i would shut it off and go outside long before then.

i guess after 15 100 posts, you take the internet a bit more seriously than most people. you are projecting your own shortcomings onto me.

the trolling accusation is so overplayed on this site. as soon as you disagree with someone it is thrown out. try a valid reply for a change instead of wishing physical harm on a person.
