Construction of a race holster
I think I found a best construction of a race holster.
I have couple of them and used them for about 3 years.
This is a typical race holster with a post to rest a barrel on and a trigger guard lock.
Trigger guard is locked in place by a wedge:
This lock mechanism is very simple, which I believe makes it more reliable. It allows inserting gun from the front, and pulling the gun straight up. To take the gun from the holster you need to pull it straight up for about 1 inch, which I think prevents gun from falling out because of small bump.
When lock mechanism is engaged - it is almost impossible to pull the gun from the holster. However placement of the lock lever is such that it is very easy to unlock it during the draw:
In fact it's even hard to try and draw the gun without unlocking the holster.
So with this construction, if stage involves some actions with you strong hand before the draw, like carrying some suitcase, a broom or something - it's very easy (and very safe) to leave holster locked, do what you need to do, and then unlock it during the draw. It will add no more than 0.1-0.2 seconds to your draw (if any at all).
This holster construction also improves safety during the insertion of the gun: if I was stupid enough to try to insert the gun in the holster while holding my finger on the trigger - at no time holster put pressure on the finger towards the trigger, as gun is inserted by moving from the front to the back, finger will just bump into the frame (not that I condone such safety violation in any way):
I think this is best possible construction of the race holster.
I'm not trying to promote any particular brand of holsters, just wanted to give some ideas on what to look for in the race holster.
This holster is also easy to adjust to different guns by using inserts of various thickness and moving the bottom part up or down.
And I particularly dislike the Ghost holster. I've seen myself couple occurrences of gun falling from these holsters during stage, causing DQ. I think their locking mechanism is too complicated.
