Reading about 3 gun matches has really caught my interest again, enough that I would like to try it.
However it seems that almost everyone uses an AR .Now why should I spend all that money when I have a perfectly good M14. I want to do it but the cheap way and not have to buy an AR. Besides the money for an AR will buy lots of ammo for a gun I already own.
So then a few questions. 1) has anyone used their m14 at a 3 gun shoot 2)are you at a disadvantage using an M14 3)If the M14 works, are their any extra things I need to go with it..mags, red dot..
Please give me a few suggestions for the shotgun and pistol as well. I was thinking a Rem 870 and an Armco tuned Norc to stay cheap.

p.s
I am hoping to drive the 2.5 hours to Kamloops to see one in action and possibly give it a go if I get it together

I've used my 18.5" M305 a couple of times for local 3-gun matches I've organized. Usually I split the shooters into Heavy (full-power rifle cartridges) and Light (intermediate rifle cartridges/pistol caliber carbine) classes so the guys running M14S's or Garands aren't shooting against AR's.

One match I was the only full-power shooter so I ran in the Light class and I won it with the M305. It's the shooter, not the gun in many cases. It did help a lot that I had AIA mags.

hey bud, I think Hungry did one with an Norc M14 years ago, and I'm sure others have as well.
Though I think the AR advantage is less weight, less recoil and cheaper ammo.
I wouldn't know, though I own a Norc M14 I've never tried a 3 gun run nor own an AR!
You can expect quite a few lively responses to this one!

I've used my SOCOM 16 in 3 gun matches, and while it's a lot of fun, there's no way to be competitive against AR's. Mag changes are a ##### on both the drop (which they don't) and on the insertion of the mag (having to rock it into position). I tried using stripper clips and while that is a bit better, you still only have 5 rounds vs. 10 (with AR's using the LAR15 mags, which everyone has), and while they may be out there I've never seen mag pouches for the 5/20 round M14 (M1A) mags... I tossed them all into a shoulder bag slung "neck and shoulder" style on my support side.

As far as red dots go, I found that I really needed a cheek piece as the dot (even in a low profile American Defense mount) sat to high to get a good cheek weld.

I'm not saying don't do it, not at all... and as mentioned it is a lot of fun, but do it with reasonable expectations or you'll be disappointed.

And while the difference in cost between your M14 and an AR may buy some ammo, the cost of 7.62 (or .308) vs. 5.56 (or .223) will add up pretty damn fast, and the .223 is a little bit easier to find in any case.

If you use the AK-type mag change and "smack out" the empty with the new one, the M14 mag changes are a lot faster.

A lot faster than what...? An AR mag change...!? And I'm not familiar with the AK-type mag change. Please elaborate if you would...

A lot faster than removing the empty then grabbing and inserting a fresh mag.

With the AK change, your hand doesn't touch the empty mag.

1) Grab fresh mag around the bottom in a "beer-can" grip.

2) Holding the mag horizontal (or close to it), firmly push the front edge of the magazine against the mag release, following through to smack the empty out of the mag well.

3) Insert new mag and run the bolt with the weak hand, either by reaching under or over the gun.

It's not as fast as a good AR mag change, but it's a lot faster than the traditional method.

Well then your Divs. are FUBAR... :D

All the 3-gun matches I've been to have had a div. specifically for guys with guns such as yours...

Refered to as "Heavy Metal" or "He-man" div. or something to that effect...

Some matches "Heavy Metal" means min. .30cal., iron sights for rifle, .45acp for pistol and 12ga pump for shotgun...

Like Stevo says ...
it ain't always the equipment, but rather the shooter.

I've seen the rifle portion of a three gun match won by a # 5 Enfield. He was making hits on the bobbers and fallers that guys with AKs and ARs couldn't do. And he beat me with my SKS D that day.

I used to shoot a lot of three gun and bowling for $$$ matches wayyyy back in the day. I preferrd the AR 10 [ which was still NON-restricted then ... that's how far back ago I am speaking about ]. Theoretically,it is pretty hard for the Cydesdales [ .308 full powered BRs ] to compete aginst the thoroughbreds [ the lighter and lighter reecoiling ARs].

UNLESS POWER FACTOR is built into the scoring. eg: ONE hit with the .308 = TWO hits with the poodle shooter.

I've also rock and rolled with the FN [ C1 & C2 ],
with the M14 [ with a regular stock and with a pistol grip fitted stock ]
and with my favorite dance partner,
the old original AI Dutch built AR 10s.

The AR 10s were the ONLY full powered battle rifle that I could control effectively, when the beat got fast. The straight line stock, massive buffer [ which gave a "shuck shuck" forward and backwards sort of rocking motion ... like an old Browning Auto 5 long recoil shotgun ] gave it a downwards push during the forward part of the recoil cycle, which kept the muzzle where it was supposed to be. I won a lot of money, back in the day, at bowling for $$$ matches, with my AR 10s, where ONE SOLID hit was better than a whole bunch of love taps..

Sounds like your matches are, well... more structured than ours. With the Wild Rose Action Shooters you shoot what you bring...

What rules / auspice do you guys shoot "under"...?

Gee Laz, how do I get to be as cool as you....!? Here, put this up on your wall... with all of your other reminders of how things used to be...
