Ruger Mini 14 - any good?

Ruger started manufacturing the factory 20 and 30 round mags again -- so there is no reason you should be forking over the $125 theyve been going for on the EE any longer (after the assault weapons ban they were even selling for ~$100 each in the US).

the price was high on the 20 round mags because they were no longer being manufactured, were stamped LEO only and were quite hard to find - and were the only mags guaranteed to function 100% reliably in the Mini-14s.
right now in the US, street price of the new Ruger factory 20 and 30 round mags is $30 each.

mini 14 is a great fun gun! if you can find a mini 30 s/s that is the way to go. cheap ammo!!!!!!!! as per mags, try to stay with ruger. about the only ones that feed. bought my first one for $400 with 4 20rd rugers mags so yes you can get them at a good price if your willing to look. or i'll sell you a s/s factory folder with mags:)

Had my mini-14 out at the range today to sight in my new red dot. Was pretty happy with </= 2" groups at 50 yards. Good enough for what I need it to do. Barrel was pretty darn hot too, I had 5 mags ready and didn't waste any time cycling them.

The mini-14 is possibly the worst gun I've ever owned. All of my friends bought them at the same time, 5 in all, and it took all of 18 months before we all got frustrated and sold them.

$125.00 magazines, 5" groups, mangled brass flying 30 feet, useless with a scope, $800 gun, I mean come on. I sold it and picked up an 858, now here's a real gun:

* Better than average accuracy
* Very light and moddable
* Scariest looking gun if you're into that kind of stuff
* Cheap milsurp ammo that is more accurate than factory ammo in a mini-14, the stuff costs 3x less.
* Better trigger
* $100 cheaper, which will buy 500 rounds of ammo.
* It was actually a service rifle unlike the mini-14
* There are Canadian manufacturers coming out with new mods all the time for this gun.
* Pistol grip comes stock, threaded barrel out the box.
* Doesn't fling brass more than a couple feet.
* More reliable than an AK47, check youtube for proof.

Downsides? You can't find factory ammo at Canadian Tire. Looks like you'll have to support local business for those 20 soft point hunting rounds per year you'll need to fill your deer tags.

NiceRice, you have obviously no experience with the newer mini's (580 model). Mine will shoot 1.5" all day - even with a warm barrel. It comes with integral scope mounts that are bullet proof. Mags are $35 a piece for 5 rounders, but I agree, the 5/20's are rediculously expensive. Tapco is coming out with a new mag that will be under $20 american and hopefully they will make their way to Kanada. The mini 14 is also dead reliable. Stainless steel is also a good thing. I also have an 858 that I use for deer hunting. Both are nice rifles, but there will always be a place for a mini 14/30 in my cabinet.

To each his (or her) own, I suppose. I've never touched an 858 so that's all I can say. I really enjoy shooting my mini-14 in or out of the ATI Strikeforce stock and wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm old school though and I don't really give a **** about MOA. I just like when it goes bang and hucks brass at the guy next to me :D:D

I've always loved the look of the Mini 14 ever since I first laid eyes on it! Can't wait to have the funds to get one..

I've seen pictures with Mini's with bayonets..which model is this? And what kind of bayonet is it?

Or is it a mod?
