CMMG - An AR-15 for a first timer?

I was wondering what peoples thoughts on the CMMG AR-15s are.

Questar is having a sale right now on them and I was considering picking one up.

My only problem is I don't know which one to consider buying.

I'm leaning more towards the A3 flat top at this point:

Any thoughts/opinions regarding the quality/accuracy/reliability etc on CMMG AR-15s?

This will be my first AR-15 and I hope that over time i'll be able to make changes to keep it interesting.

Definitely going to special order a 5 pack of PMAGs, hopefully they won't take too freakishly long to get here.

I may or may not consider getting an optic right away. So thats definitely something to consider when picking one of the CMMG rifles.
 
I have a 14.5" CMMG M4LE Model and am very happy with it! Reliable, affordable, and well built. No complaints. I also highly recommend the CMMG .22lr conversion kit for it. It makes plinking so much more affordable. Plus, who doesn't like 26 round magazines.

Theres an awfully large amount of controversy in that thread Nestor.

But the price and build quality seems pretty solid; of course its not going to be a high end piece but i'm thinking since it will be my first AR theres room for improvement, and hell, I enjoy a project rifle.

Who knows, maybe if I contact Questar they'll throw in some CMMG tactical bacon to seal the deal.

I'd definitely consider a conversion kit on a list of priority parts.

Cheap shooting always makes it that much sweeter.
 
Anyone have any extra info I could use on things such as good twist rates for 5.56 etc etc?

I'm trying to make my first experience with AR-15's as good a one as possible.
 
1:9 bbl is best for 55gr ammo. 1:7 for heavier. Look at it this way. It's not in the uber class but what is the chance of you ever having or even wanting an uber class? Another perspective is these are going cheap.........almost selling for the price of a Norinco if you can get one for $1175 or $1100 that is a steal. Questar shipping is a flat $9.99.

$1100 rife
$55 tax
$10 shipping
$1165 all in for a new US made rifle (maybe the questar stocks are offshore?)

It's tough to buy an upper on the EE for that price lol.

1:9 is best.
Why? Flexibility. It doesn't seem to have any problems throwing M856 tracers around, unless it gets really cold, it wears better than 1:7 and it stabilizes more rounds than 1:12. Additionally, 1:9 rifles, even Mil-Spec chrome chambered and barreled, can attain 1.0-2.0 MOA out to 300+ meters.

No, 1:7 and 1:8 are the best.
Why? Accuracy. For heavier and longer rounds during competition shooting, 1:8 and 1:7 twists are the best for heavy 77-80 grain rounds that I use to shoot competitively at 500-1000 meters. Who needs to shoot tracers anyhow? More importantly, heavier rounds are showing very good results in terminal testing and are proving to be much better defensive rounds.

Unless you are planning on competition shooting, buying expensive match grade ammo or loading your own ammo, I'd stick with the 1:9 twist, as most .223 ammo is 55 grain.

I like the one you're looking at (CMMG-M4-LE) or the (CMMG-F-1605-LE) with the government profile.
 
Some how I think this thread bumped the interest in them, woke up this morning and the only model still available is the 20' Lightweight model with a fixed stock.

Basically the only one in stock is the one I said straight off the bat I wouldn't be getting..

Ouch.

You had to expect that with the pricing structure they were using though. The lowest price started today so there was no reason to wait any longer.
 
Yeah, I was expecting to wake up early today but i've been sick with the flu over the past few days so I slept in until 2 in the afternoon.

Edit: On another note, maybe this is actually a good thing, it'll give me the opportunity to do a bit more research on AR platform rifles and maybe even look into assembling the firearm myself from various parts.
 
I picked up the one with the "pencil barrel" (CMMG F1604L7) and will only be using it for plinking at targets. The one I got has the 1:7 twist in it. If need be I can get a different barrel that has the 1:9 twist in it. For now, its my first and im quite happy with my purchase. Next will be an EoTech for it :D

as i guess the old saying is true you snooze you looze .........don't worry though i am sure you will be able to pick on up on EE for 1700 LOL:D
