Can i shoot 556 NATO out of my AR-15

um no they are not. pressure is diffrent due to less powder volume in the military 556. less powder less pressure. thats the diffrence. you will not burst a military barrel using civie ammo. military barrels are made strong. if you can chamber it you CAN shoot it.

im not sure about sami specs but i fix canadian c7 , c9 and every other type of weapon in the cf and i can tell you as someone who has been doing this for 13 years its safe to shoot and that they are interchangable. the chambers may be tigher in some manufactures but other than that they are the same as far as shooting goes.

argueing on the internet is like the special olympics, at the end of the day even if you win gold your still retarded.

well thats my final 2 cents on the subject, ill now let you fine folks continue to get hoses by buying from the big manufactures.

1) which suggests that you should not have offered an opinion based on ignorance. And you were incredibly wrong with your statement about "less powder less pressure" - you do know that powders can be faster or slower, yes?

2) which has nothing to do with the price of fish in Denmark.

3) "safe" is a complex question (many .223 manufacturers over-build), but "interchangeable" is simply wrong.

Perhaps you'll read the link this time:

People can and do use 5.56 in .223 chambers. Every time they do, they're subjecting the gun to more pressure than it was designed for. You want to do this? Go ahead - but don't be telling everyone that they're one and the same round, they aren't.

Better to remain silent and thought a fool... than to speak (or type) and remove all manner of doubt. You, have removed all manner of doubt.

Ok, I gotta leave my $.02

i think you will find the nato pressures are higher not lower than 223 saami specs

Yes, NATO pressures are higher than saami specs, and as mentioned in the .223 vs. 5.56 sticky, the external case dimensions of 5.56 vs. .223 are essentially identical, but the chamber and throat specifications for .223 and 5.56 chambers are not the same. Because of this, I would not advise shooting military 5.56 rounds in a .223 spec chamber!

I'll explain it with smiles

:) = good
:( = bad

5.56 round in 5.56 chamber :)
.223 round in 5.56 chamber :)
.223 round in .223 chamber :)
5.56 round in .223 chamber :( - your #### may not fall off, but I wouldn't risk it!

As noted, a .223 will be fine in a 5.56 chamber, but not the other way around (think of it like shooting a .357 magnum out of a .38 special - not a good idea). I doubt that there would be a catastrophic failiure from shooting 5.56 out of a .223 gun; however, when dealing with guns, it's always better to be safe than sorry! The 5.56 NATO has thicker case walls, but does not have a reduced powder charge as compared to .223 Remington. This is what creates the higher pressures in 5.56 chambers.

All of this aside, from the original post, I think viking just wants to know what his rifle is chambered in.

ACRASHB its safe 1000 and 1000's of rounds have proved otherwise. same same
You're certainly living up to the first part of your screen name.

I've already said that "safe" is a complex matter - read the links, then comment on them. Anything else is merely your opinion, which we've already amply demonstrated to be generally not correct.

well thats my final 2 cents on the subject
Apparently you were wrong on that, too.

Good point. It went sideways in a hurry. I believe someone sells a gauge to tell the difference. Google says: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=172172 - I have no idea if this is export-controlled or not.

you should see if it feeds the 5.56 reliably that might tell you the answer.
Nope. The external dimensions of the rounds are identical.

I have mixed and matched for the last two decades out of a myriad of platforms, 223/556 -762x51/308 with nary a hiccup...........end of rant :)

I bought a bunch of Portuguese 556 NATO surplus and i have a AR the upper has no caliber markings on it i heard if its chambered in 223 only i could hurt my gun? i bought the gun used the only markings is a keyhole mark on the upper no markings on the barrel and the lower is a CMMG any thoughts??
