Hey everyone,
Thanks for the feed back on this project of mine. I really appreciate it. Since the last time, I've slimmed the butt stock down even more, so the centre of balance is now just under the rear sight. The balance feels great, and if anything even a little lighter:
I don't mind not having the foregrip at all. I purposely removed it in order to lighten the rifle. I got the idea for this project from a rifle I wanted to buy in the 80's called a "Bronco." It was a wired framed single shot .22 survival rifle. Since this 30/30 has 6 shots, I'm 1 up on the ammo department!...
I continually shot 2 boxes of ammo through the rifle to see how hot it would get, and to me, it was not a problem at all. I was still able to hold the rifle in front of the receiver area with no problems. But then, I' ve been known to take steaming hot Dim Sum steamer trays out of a wok with my bare hands on a regular basis...
On the other hand, I always wear a pair of leathers when I'm out in the rough or shooting a lever gun. Even the original Henry's did not have a wood foregrip.
Mean while, I've just picked up another Winchester that had been accidentally left out in the weather. It had a good coat of rust on the outside, but quite decent on the inside. I've cleaned and oiled it now, and with exception of the receiver, everything turned out great.
I am starting to like the worn patina finish on the receiver, and am very tempted not to have it re-blued. It gives it that warm "lived in feeling" like an old country home.
The big decision right now is whether or not to give it the "large loop" treatment like the rest of my levers?...
