Indeed, but does he still have a pistol on his ATC, or has he been required to switch to a revolver? CC reported that they pulled his 10mm and told him revolvers only. I didn't put a pistol on my ATC, only revolvers, so the change only impacted me for what I might of done. At one time there was no restriction as to the number of guns you could have on the ATC, now they don't seem to want you to have more than two, and they are demanding that those two be revolvers. The good news is that I got my renewal last week.
 
To answer your original question, a S&W or Ruger would be my recommendation. Either are fine revolvers.

I think a 5" barrel makes the best balance and is plenty handy. If you want something shorter, you could have a competent gunsmith shorten one to the legal minimum for you.

As to the legality of what you mentioned, I think that's been covered.

Problem is I think the only .454 casull you can get here would be the super redhawk in the 7.5 inch barrel. I was looking for one and that seemed to be all I could find. Realistically I don't know that I would want a shorter barrel with that much recoil. Problem being it is huge and wieighs a ton. There is the Alaskan model but if you watch any video of it being fired with .454 casull and not the .45 colts you will see what I mean. It is a tough choice if you ask me. I don't know how many rounds you would get on target with the .454 casull. Even the .44 mag is hard to control with the 4.2 inch barrel. I chose the 5.5 inch and with 20 grains of 2400 and 240 grainers I am just getting the hang of it. I would want to be able to dump all 6 rounds in a matter of seconds with some decent accuracy, and with that .454 casull it is not an easy task.
 
Do any of you have a source for 310gr Hammerhead or Hammerhead Defender, Garrett rounds for the 44mag? I just had the transfer approved for my 3" S+W 629 and would like a few boxes of capable rounds;) I think a Super Redhawk in 454 with a barrel reduced to 4.25" would be a sweet deal:D Do any of you have a good holster to recommend for a 3" S+W 629 44mag?

Get a custom leather holster for that 629.

I can't believe some of the thoughts on this subject. Some of you want a pea shooter and some of you want a cannon that you cannot probably even shoot that well.

I am just waiting for the "file the front sight off" joke in this thread.

I am not saying it isn't a good bear defense gun just that I think I'd rather have a slightly longer barrel to help put the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th shots on target.
 
The super redhawk 454 is Probably the best hand gun i own. They come up on the ee once in a while. I had one a couple years back. Sold it. Regreted it... and found another
from Delselins and snagged it. Not for sale. Ever. By the way, handguns are useless for bear repellant. Shotguns work the best. I've shot my share of bears.

Hi i sold mine to FrozenSnake last fall it was 7 1/2" . He told me he was sending it up to Gunmar at Armco to shorten it to 4.2" i told him it won't have the velocity of the longer barrel and some of the powder won't properly burn as it fires. As i was told by other people that had there long barreled guns shorten. Specially the heavier cartridges that use more powder like H-110 or Win 296 because there slow burning powders. I couldn't handle the recoil my poor hand hurted for awhile not a good gun for target shooting especially full house loads i'll stick with my 41 & 44 Magnums as there more fun to shoot. If you like big Bang! Guns go for it when you hit my age you'll have a different view Good Luck have fun be Safe..Rick
 
the nice thing about the 44 mag is that it's just like the 38/357- you can start off with bottom of the chart 44 spcl loads and then crawl back to the " magnum' ladings, or stop where you comfortable-there's even some loads on the net that are SPECIFICALLY FOR THE REDHAWK- just like the 45 colt-

When I saw what the second guy was doing I started to cringe in anticipation of that left hand thumb getting just a WEEEEEEE bit too far forward and getting sliced off by the side sheet of gases. He's obviously a big time semi shooter and I'm sure his "match" was for IPSC or similar. I'm surprised that his buddy didn't notice the risky grip method for the revolver...... *shudder*
