You can have a look at this thread, and I also have a bunch of other threads about the 228, 229, 239 and NP34.

The 229 has a bit of a "stocky" feel to it. The frame is no different than a 228 frame, but for some reason the 229 has a stockier look and feel to it, to my mind.
I have two of the 229's and I really love them. I recommend the SRT trigger system these days, but you can definitely train yourself to become very adept at shooting a SIG with the normal reset trigger - if that is all (or at least mostly) what you shoot. Switching back and forth is tough.
If you could are looking for a good pistol, you could do a hell of a lot worse than any SIG 229.
If you want the smallest "stock" SIG, the 239 tactical in 9mm is the way to go. You can see in the thread that I posted above that the slide isn't much shorter than a 228 or 229 slide. The difference is that it is skinnier. The 239 is designed to be, a little bit smaller, and a lot flatter version of the full-size SIG. The slide is skinner. The frame is skinner. It is single stack, and the the slide release is recessed into the frame a lot more.
239 is smaller. If small is your thing, get it. We only have access to one model in Canada though (that I am aware of), the 9mm tactical with threaded barrel and SRT. I have one. They are nice guns.
A couple of potential downsides: the front strap is very flat. Some people don't like that. The grip is also a little on the small side for some people. Also, if you have the tendancy to hold the slide release lever down on SIGs, it is magnified with the 239.
