858 0r sks?

If someone will try to sell You SKS over 858 just run away.
SKS is a decent, but cheap rifle (wait...it's flying for over $300 now and I saw one for $500 as well ) in every meaning of this word.
Seriously, just buy 858 and be happy.
If You want the SKS for some reason it's still fine, but please be advised that the current prices make such deal not so great anymore.

Time for us SKS faithful to speak up. Understand that I am not an 858 hater. Just keeping it real. In fact I tried to trade one S&W 686 for a CZ858 last year.

Apples and oranges, different flavor, some people prefer one over the other, but both nutricious and good for you.

Same with 858 and SKS. They are both functional and utterly reliable.

People say the SKS is cheap. Yes, it is cheap to buy, right now here in Canada. But it is not cheap to buy in the USA or other countries. I saw an Eastern European website that advertised CZs for cheaper than you could buy SKS's here.

It is not cheaply made. Compare the SKS receiver to the CZ/VZ 858 receiver. You are looking at a machined steel forging vs. a steel stamping. Which one is cheap? Correction as pointed out by Fat Tony below: Both have machined receivers. The receiver covers are cast or forged/machined in the SKS and stamped in CZ858.

Look at the metal finishing. SKS is blued, the other is painted. Which one is cheap?

Look at the stocks. SKS is solid birch or laminated birch and the other is pressed wood chips...wood scraps similar to fireplace kindling. Which one is cheap????

Now, if we just remain objective and say that the CZ is more accurate, no argument there. The CZ looks cool...well, that is totally subjective. One likes mag fed? Well my 5/20 Tapco'd Russkie Tula works fine, and can take strippers as well, and looks good with one. But for practical use here in canada, a 5 round flush magazine is all one needs, anything more is purely for looks.

For me, stripper clip loading is as fast as detachable box loading/unloading. Remember, to reload the SKS fixed mag, all you need to do is pop in a fresh clip and push down. To reload an empty CZ, you need to remove the empty mag, find a fresh one and then ram it home. Which process do you think is faster? If we are talking reloading 20 or 30 rounds, I agree, the mag is faster, but we are not.

The CZ is lighter by a lb or two, for carrying all day, I guess that's good for some people...some won't really care.

I would've bought a CZ858 a few years ago, but when I handled one at LeverArms, I said NO THANKS.

Today if one were to build new SKS and new 858s, which one would cost more? The answer to that question is the true measure of cheap.

If I wanted to shoot cool shooting military look alike weapons, yeah I'd go for the CZ. But, bin der dan dat with M1A, and selective fire M16A1s and Thompson submachine guns. For now, I am perfectly happy shooting, cleaning and just plain looking at my cheap to buy but well-designed and built Russkie SKS.

For all that's been said about 858's and SKS's one should really have and enjoy both.

lol. not everyone sits one their hands and shoot paper targets from a bench or shoot up some old toilet in the gravel pit.

Have you tried doing a reload with stripper clips during service rifle or service CQB? How about 3 gun match?

Its very subjective to ones type of shooting.

We don't care what an SKS costs in the US, we don't live there.

The 858 is not stamped steel it is machined.

Who cares if it's painted, its a service rifle. The type of finish has little to do with quality.

The stock construction is a non issue. The stock is used to support the rifle, not cook a campfire meal, nor is it something to oil up and admire in the safe, its a service rifle designed to work.

If you can't reload with a magazine any faster than a stripper clip you need help. I can assure you a magazine is faster and easier to use than a stripper clip.

the CZ loads from a stripper clip also.

I must have got a special 858 as mine takes stripper clips, and has a machined reciever?

TDC, I have to disagree on two points.

Who cares if it's painted, its a service rifle. The type of finish has little to do with quality.
Finish has everything to do with quality. If the finish is uneven or of bad quality the metal will not be protected and will be subject to corrosion, rust, etc.

The stock construction is a non issue. The stock is used to support the rifle, not cook a campfire meal, nor is it something to oil up and admire in the safe, its a service rifle designed to work.
Once again, would you go into combat with cheap low quality plastic stock set? The stock must be able to take some abuse and give it when needed. There's no denying it the beaver barf stock isn't the prettiest thing but it is durable and cost effective.

The quality of the finish is usually a barometer of the overall quality. The type of finish is not. I have yet to have the paint wear off mine. Surface rust is a non issue and can be cleaned up with ease should it appear.

I agree that a good stock is important, but the factory offering on the 858 is not crap, it is more than capable of the task.

Does that answer your question Nestor?

So I just bought a used SKS and have put a few rounds thru it.
With just a few rounds thru I can't say as I'm a big fan of the front sight.
Awefully big and don't know how good I'll ever become with it.Does the 858 have better sights than the SKS?
It has a synthetic dragunov style stock and it seems to make aquiring the front sight difficult,it was one of the things that I liked about the gun,but now I'm not so sure.
Don't really plan on mounting a scope.
Anyway wondering how the 858 sights compare to the SKS....

If you feel the front sight post is to big you are not alone, so did I. Check out Tech Sights they sell a .047 front post. Made a big difference in reguards to the SKS sight picture.
