hope to get out and knock a few over with my CZ 221 Fireball again...and I have a Sako AI in 17 Rem that I'll try out this year...I'll know in Sept which one is my favourite...
I just received a Cooper Classic in 17 Fireball. I'm so looking forward to finding some squeeks this summer. I have a Sako Quad in .22 that I really like also.
The rifle that gets the most usage in a gopher field is my Valmet .22 rimfire target rifle. the one I like shooting the most is a custom 6BR because it is a fricken laser beam on the little furry beasts.
This summer I will also have a Savage 223 Rem and a custom 221 Fireball to help splatter gophers.
Tough call. My Tikka T3 "Tactical" (.223) was probably my all-time favourite, with a old ZKM 465 in .22 Hornet as a very close second. As finicky as the Hornet was to get shooting consistently, it is a wonderfully accurate verminator.
Other great gopher rifles over the years have included: a Browning 1885 low wall in .221 Fireball (rechambered from .22 Hornet), a Tikka 595 HB Varmint in .223 Rem., Tikka 595 Sporter and a Sako AI (sporter with laminated stock) in .17 Rem. For close-up work, the CZ 452 Varmint works just fine.
So, the theory goes, if you've got at least a couple to choose from, none of them get too warm out in the field.
Savage 93FV in 22 magnum with remington premier accutip ammo. Its a little more expensive than 22lr but its accuracy at distance is well worth it. I have a 10/22 as well but ..... its just not my main gun for gophers.
I have to agree with Pharoh, the one I use the most is my Henry Lever. I really like a .17 HMR as well and hopefully will have another 10/22 to see how a semi works in the gopher fields.
