Lever action virgin

Thanks for the help, I have to say I like the Marlin Guide Gun Stainless With the Ghost Sights. I think Im leaning towards the Marlin Model 1895SBL. Big loop, stainless, not too long, and the popular yet powerful 45-70 gov.
Good Bad???

i've got the gs and love it. my buddies waiting for the sbl, they run between
$1100.00 and $1400.00. their pretty neat but i dont like the limp wrist, straight stocks for me:)

For cheap shooting if you reload you better go 25-20 or better yet 32-20.
Cheap like Borsch to shoot.

Haven't shot a triple 4 but I tried Davey's two Marlins in 45-70 with his 'Keith' load.
I much prefered the pistol grip to the straight, it was easier to hold onto and my knuckle didn't get rapped every time. If I recall I was bleeding after only a few shots.

His 45 Colt is mighty fun looking too.

The 45 Colt with a 255g flat point is a riot to shoot! Super accurate and deadly on gophers as well :D
There I have a difference of opinion. The 22 cals were brought about for the express task of 'dealing' with Gophers. Using a 45 cal, be it a 45LC or 45-70, if you miss, you dig them an entrance they can enter, standing upright.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Well...

Whether you are, or are not going to hunt with it, then I have a couple of levers that might be of interest..

This is my Rossi .357 Magnum shorty lever:

My pair of .454 Rossi's:

My 30-30 (top) and .44 Magnum (bottom):

This one shows the size of my 30-30 compared to the .454:

,357 Mag is probably the most cost effective due to the price of .38 special and .357 Mag ammo. I prefer the .454 as I shoot .45 Colt through them. You can load down .45 to almost no recoil, or max it out to about the same as a .44 Mag. In today's market, over the counter .45 Colt is about the same price as 30-30, so I've been shelving the .454s in favour of my 30-30s these days.

On the other hand, I just picked up this toy for $200:

It was in really rough shape when I got it, but it recovered quite nicely, and is about to get the large loop treatment!...

Yes... Chuck and the Duke were my hero's when I was a kid. But... Recently "Ghost Rider" is catching up. Hence the inspiration for the 30-30 skeleton frame.

I hope this has helped to wet your appetite for levers.

:)

w.w.w.

Not hard, only as expensive as you want it to be. You can get started for $30 with a Lee Loader but a press set up will start you around $200 for most of what you need minus cases, bullets, powders and primers. Check the reloading section for full details.

WANTED: Win 94 with the big hoop in 357 Mag. PM me, cash waiting..... :D

Chuck Conners used a Winchester Model 1892 in .44/40. I have a M92 mfg in 1906 rebarrelled into .44 magnum and the action is as smooth as butter. As is the .38 Spl/.357 Stainless Rossi with a big loop lever that I bought as my fiancee's backup rifle(I've used in in 2 matches so far this year & love it) for CAS. Don't waste your money on post '64 Winchesters, you will live to regret it! I know I did!!

I do thank you kindly for the tip. Will make sure to get something good the first time around. I hate getting the wrong thing and then have to replace it later. Somewhere it was posted that we all should learn from others' mistakes, cuz we don't live long enough to make all our own and correct them. Glad to be a member here. Thanks again.

If you're looking for fun to shoot lever, I'd steer you towards the pistol cartriges, like the 45 colt, 357/38spl, 44. Cheep, fun, and eventually you're going to "need" a good revolver... may as well get one in the same caliber.

I've got the marlin 1894 in 45 colt (and an uberti cattleman.. what can I say.. I "needed" it!)

With my reloads it hits the pie plate at 200 yards (which is all I'm good for with iron sites) and it's great fun to shoot.

And the 45 colt hold 10 rounds in the tube, one more than the 45-70 :D

for the record, my reloads are 250 grain XTP on top of 23 grains of IMR4227 (too hot for the revolver, but the rifle just loves them)
