CZ-858 questions....trying to close in on a purchase decision

Ah ok lol That IS pretty rapid, moreso than anything I would be doing. I am reading about a number of people who are ditching their M14's for this rifle, which is I guess a pretty strong argument in it's favour. I understand why though.... I do love the M14, but for me the recoil can leave you a bit sore after a day of shooting, and surplus ammo is very rare and just too expensive nowadays.

Has anyone besides Fat Tony found that their front site assembly was rotated away in either direction from the center 12 o'clock position?

I found my m14 with smith brake to have less noticeable recoil than a stock cz858... but cost of ammo is the reason the m14 is on the chopping block.

My front post is offset to the right of center by about 1-1.5mm. The rifle is still accurate though, so it must just be the assembly tolerances...

My buddy that also had his rifle out, he works it pretty hard, but his paint is still fully intact and he's 2000+ rounds thought it...

Thanks NavyCuda.... it sounds like you mean just the front sight post itself is off-center? I am talking about the entire front sight assembly being rotated off-center on the barrel like a lot of the M14s.

I think you might be onto something there, the front sight does look a little twisted to the left and the post is moved over to the right to compensate...

In any case even if it is true it doesn't effect the performance of the rifle and apparently there are a number of them like that... Almost complete negated if you put optics on the rifle...

I too would be interested to find out if they are new production or pieced together from milsurps.

My front sight is almost all the way to the right, but does it matter? The gun is sighted in and will not change. The main point with the front sight is if it is to far out of alignment you will not be able to sight in the gun. If this happens take it back.

How much did you pay for your rifle? - they are retailing for close to $700.00 tax and shipping not included, so you have a rifle that you paid that $$$ for and you are okay with the front sight being cockeyed? Well maybe $700 is chump change to you, but not to a lot of us. Best regards Tony

I bought my first 858 last Friday ( purchased from site sponsor Reliable here in Vancouver ) made the call during the day and picked up after work. The model I bought was the non-restricted with folding stock.

Impressions:

Nicely packaged with the rifle in a plastic bag. A readable instruction booklet and warranty card. New mag pouch with 4 5/30 mags. Three of the mags looked brand new with the fouth looking a bit worn. A new bayonet scabbard and what appears to be a new bayonet. A cleaning kit was also present and appears standard military - more of a curio than what I'd use but nice to have.

Opened the baggie and "Wow" - this is light gun. Folding stock works well ( a bit stiff but still easily operable ) and all mags fit snug but not too tight. Fit and finish very good - no tool marks and seems to be very well put together. Trigger - military style but very acceptable and I'm guessing 5-6lbs. The resin wood all looked fine with no issues. I had held one before and already knew the pistol grip was a bit small but its OK for now. Gave the barrel a good clean and ready for the range.

At the range on Sunday - only had a short time to play so I grabbed two boxes of the S+B non corrosive 7.62x39 rather than the surplus stuff I have and rifle functioned perfectly. All magazines fed properly and I had no problems. Recoil mild of course (even with a folder) and accuracy was 3-4 " at 100m with iron sights. Was shooting a bit high but I had my SKS sight tool with me so made appropriate adjustments.

Overall Conclusions: I have a couple of SKS's and an AR and this rifle seems to fit right between them. Overall quality better than the SKS but the ergonomics falls short of the AR. For what I paid, I think this is a good value rifle. Ammo is currently very cheap and I can see myself using this rifle very frequently.

Accuracy: guy i went shooting with was hitting the plate at 300yds using iron sights with consecutive shots..i can't do that, but it can be done..

Fun Rating IMO: A+++

gunna buy my own once the money is here
