.22lr for Coyote hunting

I bet if you shot 10 yotes with a .22lr at 100 yards, atleast 5 would get away. Thats too bad of odds for me. WTF would you use a .22lr? or any rimfire for that matter? Why limit yourself like that? Buy a .22-250 and be done with it.

If you are quoting odds based on your ability then I agree YOU shouldn't do it.

WTF is right, Why would you grossly over gun a Yote at < 100 yards with a .22-250?

If the person doing the shooting is a good shot, and the shot presents itself, a .22lr is all you need. A STANDARD VELOCITY .22lr will penetrate THROUGH a 4L Milk jug filled with water at 100 yards.

If that's not enough punch out to that distance for someone to get the job done, then I question whether they should be shooting at anything other than inanimate targets. Grossly over gunning to cover up their inadequacy with their skills is just as inhumane in my books.... just my .02

Also: I too have used LOTS of Standard Velocity .22lr for Yote out to that distance too, never had one get away. Never had to track one for miles...

If I didn't have a shot, I didn't take it. Maybe it was too windy etc.... Would a .22-250 have given me a shot? YUP! It would've, That's not the point of this thread though. The question was the ability of a .22lr to take Yotes, and how far.

I personally can hit a milk jug lid at 100m (110 yards) CONSISTENTLY with my .22lr. I have no trouble picking my shots on a Yote's head at that distance.

Q: Should everyone use a .22lr to hunt Yote out to 100 yards?

A: No.

Q: Should everyone be able to?

A: Yes. IMHO.

Hey, use what you use, just don't condemn us that have the skills to get the job done without over gunning is all I'm saying. :jerkit:

And yes, If I'm GOING YOTE HUNTING I take a .223 for the longer distance head shots that happen.;)

grossly over gun a yote at 100 yards with a .22-250? Wow, never heard that one before.

I know, I've shot my fair share of dogs/pigs with a .22lr in the head. It drops them instantly.

All I'm saying is there is too much room for error with a .22lr. Sure, maybe YOU can peg a milk jug cap at 100 yards. But in a hunting situation where a coyote is running in full tilt and stops (head still moving around looking, listening for the sound) maybe you don't have half a mile to watch him come in to calm down and set up for that head shot.

Like I said, if you have the shot.

Like bow hunting, do you dispute the ability of a bow to take a Moose?
Within range, and a good shot they are all you need to get it done. ;)

And yes within 100 yards a .22-250 is just as much overkill as a 300WM is on deer at that distance. (There's a story... actually 68 yards:puke:).
Don't get me wrong, overkill is fun too. Vaporizing vermin is high on the list too! :D

But so is challenging yourself and your skills, making yourself better.

I have been hunting yotes with a 22-250 for years, I just recently put it in the EE to trade for a .223 and even with a .223 I plan to load a light 36 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade.

Here on PEI we are SUPPOSED to save our Coyote pelts, my 250 was destroying them 90% of the time. I have been using the Grenades this year and it is much better but I think I will still go with a .223.

with my .223 55g PSP core-lokts I get a pencil sized entrance and nickle sized exit at any range (under 300 yards) My brothers all use .22-250 and with 45g hollow points, they punch bigger holes then my .223, but nothing to say the pelt is useless.

Who cares if you blow the shoulder all to hell on a coyote with a .22-250, pelt could still be good. Its differnet on a deer where you can loose a lot of meat with a 300wsm shattering the shoulder. Maybe you guys eat your coyotes?

I'm going to start using my .25\06 more often, and find the most fragmenting bullet out there. Last year I sent in my 4 coyote pelts.....got a check for 18 cents (after royalties, shipping and other taxes) Gave all mine away this year. Not going threw that hassle anymore.

Hey go ahead, your call. Like I said vaporizing can be fun, but is overkill.
If the goal is to dispatch quickly and cleanly, a .22lr is all you need at 100 yards or less. apparently my .22lr has the same poop as your .223 as the entrance/exit holes are the same...

So why do you keep saying my .22lr isn't enough at 100 yards or less?

So .22 LR with velociters at 100 yards, how much drop is there?

curious......

Not much. Anything out to 100 yards with my open sighted Browning is toast. I would guess I hold about 4-6 inches over with standard high velocity stuff, but it's more about the feel I get for the shot rather then trying to guess the proper hold over in any actual measurment.

this Velocitor info was borrowed from somewhere else
note the 200 yard zero
still around a 11 inch drop at 100 yards from the muzzle though
