best 1911 for under $1200

I don't know about the Kimber or the Taurus. Simply because of the lack of factory support. I like the STI's though if your gonna spend that much.

I'd recommend a Para... However ... From what i hear, the quality has gone downhill since they moved stateside... IMO I would try to find one of the canadian ones around here on the EE ...

Para's quality is always at the bottom of the hill regardless moved to the State or not. And they are not at the same level as any other 1911.

I'm surprised, nobody's mentioned the Sig 1911 models.
I have a Sig GSR Revolution XO that I bought here on EE not too long ago. No plastic parts, Sig reliability, great trigger, very smooth and accurate gun.
Price is around $1200 or less for a used one.
BTW, Para... I had a 1911 LTC commander with alloy body. Light weight, smooth, accurate and a very good looking gun. The only problem I had with it was cosmetic. The Para finish was easy to scratch. Other than that, great gun.
Armco tuned Norinco? Yes! Gunnar makes the trigger pull light and crisp which improves accuracy. For about $600 (tax, shipping included) you get a reliable and accurate gun. Not as tight fit as other brands but the other $600 will buy you a complete reloading kit or enough ammo for a long time.

If I was starting fresh in the 1911 game the first one I'd get would be an STI Spartan via Armco. Then put the rest into ammo until I was set up to reload.
