SKS Thoughts?

Ok, so I've read enough posts from folks that have SKS rifles, that I'm now considering picking one up, mainly because I find that the ammo is so unbelievably cheap!!!

$229 for 1200 rounds, I mean come on!

Ok - so here is my thought:

SKS with a Choate SKS Dragunov stock and an Optic (3-10x of whatever flavour I have hanging around).

Are there any major drawbacks to the SKS that I should watch out for?

Of course, I'm always open to feedback on this and other suggestions for kit....

They are built like tanks and very reliable. If you can since you are interested in putting optics on it I would get a mount that doesn't need to be removed every time you clean the gun.

Save yourself the angst and get a VZ858-2. That's apparently what you really want anyhow.

The SKS is a great gun in original configuration, but don't trailer park it with a Choate dragon-puke piece of plastic junk. Also, you can't remove the dust cover to clean the gun without completely removing the stock. Very poor design.

Jump in and get both feet wet. The SKS is a fun rifle,you will not regret it. Out your way you can pick up Chinese or Russian SKS for between $160.00 and $200.00 no need to pay more. If you are going to restock the rifle, try the different stocks find the one that fits you. The composite stocks do make the rifle feel and shoot better. If you have any questions do not hesitate to PM me.
 
Have to agree with Claven2. From experience, I've tried different mods on a SKS before, and found it all to be more of a hassle than anything. Best left in stock form.
Save your money and get a CZ. Thats what I did.
The CZ 858 is the ticket if you looking for something to modify with great results.

I agree with Newmer. An SKS is a great starter gun in this caliber, but they are very heavy compared to the CZ 858. The CZ 858 is more fun to shoot, handles better and has great accessories that work with it. By the time you accessorize an SKS, you could have owned a better stock rifle.

Of course the SKS makes a great truck gun that you are not afraid to beat up, because they don't cost as much. Some people tend to baby more fancy rifles and use them less, believing they will have great collector values or because they simply cost lots of money to buy. Hence, many rifles become 'safe queens' rather than shooters, based on their percieved value. So your choice should largely be based on how you plan to use it.

If you decide to buy an SKS, rememember that Russian and Yugo SKS's are built to last. Some Chinese SKS's have cheaper stamped trigger parts which can break. If you are going to keep it stock, go with the SKS that feels right in your hands. I prefer the Yugo myself.

I have to disagree, just start looking around the internet . There is a lot of good products for Mods starting to be manufactured today for the SKS, in the past I would agree some were alot of junk. As far as the 858 I could not justify the money for one of these rifles and sold mine. The accessories for the 858 are also big $$$. Do the math SKS...858
 
I have to take the other side here. I've had as many as five CZs at once in different configurations. But I sold them all and only kept SKSs. Now I've either owned or tried just about all of the aftermarket stocks,except for the Choate folder. Found the Tapco that everyone is crazy over way too thin and spindly. They crack at the rear of the receiver real easy too. I've since went back to the original stocks on my shooters.
 
Some of the early Tapco stocks did have a problems. I was assured by Tapco that the problems were fix. They sent me a new stock no questions asked and they did not even ask for the old one back. Most of the Composite stock manufactures have a Lifetime warranty.

There a lot of reviews out there on different SKS boards from people that know what they are talking about by occupation and reputation, would disagree with you.
I think people should try the different products before generalized coments are made.

Take it easy....I shot a 3-gun with a Tapco'd SKS and it shoots just fine. Extra length with the adjustable stock makes if fun for the whole family. I wasn't the only one there with a Tapco SKS and I am sure one of us knows something. :D

The tapco stocks are fine for adjusting length of pull but it is not as rigid and when you do bench shooting at 100 yards or more, you can't really achieve good results as you will have many flyers. But I agree, it is the best for shooting with the whole family at 50 yards (or less if you may).
