So I owned a Savage 11fcxp in .308 win, and decided to sell it and buy a Stevens 200 in .270 win so I could also shoot coyotes as there is a caliber restriction in my area. Anyways I got the thing from EPPS for 350 and tax and slapped on the cheap(apparently s**tty) Bushnell scope I had from that Savage package gun. I also had a Caldwell bipod kickin around and decided that today would be the day Id try my luck with it at the range. Previously I just had it out the day I bought it to get it setup and only sighted the scope in at 50m. Took me 2 shots to get it on target at 100m and a couple minor adjustments and I was ready to make some magic happen.

First let me say that I am by no means an expert, or even a novice rifle shooter. This is the only long range rifle I own. My other rifle is a Marlin 336, and before this was the Savage 11fcxp which is esentially the same gun. I have probably fired less than 200 rounds at 100 yards in my life!

The tip:

At 50m I was shooting around 2 inches and the tip I got off of some forum was to adjust the forward most screw on the trigger. I backed it out about 3 turns, and function tested the rifle and was off to the range today to see what happend.

The Rifle:

Stevens 200 - .270 Win.

The Scope:

Cheapest Bushnell You can get!(3-9 x 30 I think)

The Ammo:

Again cheapest I could find.

And now for the magic! This is the only one I took a picture of but they were all under 1.5 inches most around 1 inch and this one I believe is just under an inch measuring from center to center of the holes. If that is how you would measure a group? Like I said I am a newb to all this and was extatic with the results!

100 meters:

200 meters:

This was actually the last 3 cartridges I had and decided to see what happend at 200m. The RO told me with my 22 inch barrel and these bullets I should be aiming about 3-4 inches high to get close to the bull so that is exactly what I did. Not in the bull but the gun was zeroed at 100m. Again I was amazed at the results!

So the moral of the story is that it doesnt take alot of money or fancy equipment to shoot well, and have alot of fun! The total package cost me well under $500 and I couldnt ask for more. I still here people bashing the Stevens rifles and all I can say is lets go to the range!!!!!!!

nicely done. one of our members here wrote an article about building up a long range rifle on a budget, i believe his base rifle was a Stevens 200. i think it was MysticPlayer or somesuch from Mystic Precision.

Yeah I think it was Jerry(Mystic Player) He is actually the guy who bought my Savage 11fcxp I mention in my OP! He was one of the guys who convinced me to go with the Savage in the first place. I was thinkin about going with a Marlin XS7 but saved the $50 and I dont regret it at all!

Well said, and I totally agree with you. :)

Yeah after your post in my thread about painting my 200 I backed my screw off another 1/2 turn and feel it is still safe and have no idea why swapping out the trigger would be necessary, unless it was going to be a paper punching bench rest gun only. For hunting I can get a light crisp clean break with the stock trigger!

Good shooting. I haven't gotten around to tinkering with the trigger on mine although I really should.

This is supposed to work I think.

The Stevens 200 doesn't have the screw numbered 2, so you cannot adjust the creep out. I dropped in a trigger from an older Savage Model 12, it has all of the adjustments shown in this link. I still couldn't get it below 4 lbs but I got it nice and crisp with no creep or overtravel. This trigger also has a nice shoe on it.

You can't argue with those results!

I got a better trigger by calling Sharp Shooters Supply in Yankee land and getting a few Savage three screw triggers.I think they were 20 bucks each.Way better then the stock one (which isn't half bad if you substitute a safety pin mics out at .041 for the trigger spring) Also tried their Competition trigger for 97 bucks. Think I'll stick with the three screw ones.

Good stuff. I just bought a Stevens 200 in .243 a couple months ago. Still havent had a chance to fire it yet(I think when I go hunting the coyotes just sit in the tree line and point and laugh) I should have it at the range at some point this some to try it out.

I just have to work on getting them all in the circles then I dont have to measure. LOL. I really need a better scope. Somethiing a little higher powered would make a huge difference. Shooting .270 is costing me too much though. I am buying a .223 in the next couple months for sure, and then start loading my own. I'm getting excited!

Those groups weren't fired by that rifle package....

Everybody knows unless you spend a $1K on the rifle and another $1k on the scope, you'll be lucky to keep your shots on paper...and your #### will fall off!:jerkit:

He has the fever and is starting to make some sense now.
